Be careful with what you post, people are reading.

  People sometimes forget that social media is a public space. For a while, when I was younger, it was normal to show the causes and ideas that I believed in on social media. Luckily, most of these social media don't exist anymore, like Orkut ( what came before Facebook) and Fotolog ( a very old precursor of Instagram). Maybe you can see old posts on my Facebook sharing a news or an idea that I believe. The problem is that depending on what you represent in your job or school, these ideas can't sound bad and you end up being fired from work or expelled from school. Is that fair?

  I remember a famous case that has already been probably 10 years from. A communication director from IAC, an important US company that owns many brands, including the magazine "People" got fired because she posted a controversial sentence on Twitter. During a trip to South Africa, she posted: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”. It was for sure a very racist talk. Racism is a crime in many places. Now imagine in another context the same person in a coffee area said the same thing, isn't the same problem?

  Maybe the case above isn't so difficult to be against the company that fired. But there was a more recent case where a high school student and cheerleader in the US was expelled after saying "F*** school, f*** cheer, f**** everything" on Snapchat. Her coach saw this message and brought it to the director's attention. The case went through the Supreme Court, which decided to rule in favour of the student. The Supreme Court alleged that the school shouldn't care about what the student does outside of the school. In this case, who has never commented on this type of thing about the school or professors with classmates?

  People might think that there are two different measures for something similar. But I don't agree. In the first case, the person manifested a prejudice against other humans, maybe even this type of prejudice can be dangerous. Some racist people attack other humans. Probably that wasn't the case, but still it doesn't look good for a company having an employee, especially leading communication area, who has this behaviour. In the second case, maybe we can see a bit of excess authority. The school needs to regulate what students are doing, especially within the school area. Schools can't rule outside of their area; this is the area of other systems, including the parental system.

  For sure, if the student said the same thing directly to the teacher or director inside the Campus, that could have been different. I also read some other cases where students posted racist videos on TikTok and got expelled by school. In this case is more complicated to be in favour of these students. Probably, they have many colleagues who are of African descent ,and in some way, you are harming them as well. So, maybe people should learn to avoid some exposition and be careful with whom they talk about a thought.

  As pessoas às vezes esquecem que as redes sociais são um espaço público. Por um tempo, quando eu era mais jovem, era normal expor as causas e ideias em que eu acreditava nas redes sociais. Felizmente, a maioria dessas redes sociais não existe mais, como o Orkut (que veio antes do Facebook) e o Fotolog (um precursor muito antigo do Instagram). Talvez você possa ver postagens antigas no meu Facebook compartilhando uma notícia ou uma ideia em que eu acredito. O problema é que, dependendo do que você representa no seu trabalho ou na sua escola, essas ideias podem não soar ruins e você acaba sendo demitido do trabalho ou expulso da escola. Isso é justo?

  Lembro-me de um caso famoso que provavelmente já aconteceu há 10 anos. Uma diretora de comunicação da IAC, importante empresa americana dona de diversas marcas, incluindo a revista "People", foi demitida por postar uma frase polêmica no Twitter. Durante uma viagem à África do Sul, ela postou: "Vou para a África. Espero não pegar AIDS. Brincadeira. Sou branca!". Com certeza foi uma conversa muito racista. Racismo é crime em muitos lugares. Agora imagine em outro contexto a mesma pessoa em um café dizendo a mesma coisa. Não é o mesmo problema?

  Talvez o caso acima não seja tão difícil de ser contra a empresa que demitiu. Mas houve um caso mais recente em que uma estudante do ensino médio e líder de torcida nos EUA foi expulsa após dizer "F***-se a escola, f***-se a torcida, f****-se tudo" no Snapchat. O treinador dela viu a mensagem e a levou ao conhecimento do diretor. O caso foi levado ao Supremo Tribunal Federal, que decidiu a favor da aluna. O Supremo Tribunal Federal alegou que a escola não deveria se importar com o que a aluna faz fora da escola. Nesse caso, quem nunca comentou esse tipo de coisa sobre a escola ou os professores com os colegas?

  As pessoas podem pensar que existem duas medidas diferentes para algo semelhante. Mas eu discordo. No primeiro caso, a pessoa manifestou preconceito contra outras pessoas, talvez até esse tipo de preconceito possa ser perigoso. Algumas pessoas racistas atacam outras pessoas. Provavelmente não foi o caso, mas ainda assim não parece bom para uma empresa ter um funcionário, especialmente liderando a área de comunicação, com esse comportamento. No segundo caso, talvez possamos ver um pouco de excesso de autoridade. A escola precisa regular o que os alunos estão fazendo, especialmente dentro da área escolar. As escolas não podem decidir fora de sua área; esta é a área de outros sistemas, incluindo o sistema parental.

  Com certeza, se o aluno dissesse a mesma coisa diretamente ao professor ou diretor dentro do campus, a situação poderia ter sido diferente. Também li outros casos em que alunos postaram vídeos racistas no TikTok e foram expulsos da escola. Nesse caso, é mais complicado ser a favor desses alunos. Provavelmente, eles têm muitos colegas afrodescendentes e, de alguma forma, você também os está prejudicando. Então, talvez as pessoas devessem aprender a evitar certas exposições e ter cuidado com quem falam sobre um pensamento.
