A perspective from evolution about our life purpose.

  We keep looking for the purpose of life as humans, but maybe the purpose is simpler than we think. Philosophically speaking, maybe each one of us needs to find it despite of the difficulty. However, the natural meaning of life is something that many people forget. I was hearing a podcast yesterday about the challenges of anti-aging research, and it is very clear that humanity is still battling against death. We all live one time, and life isn't forever. But what is natural about that?

  Did you ever have a hamster? I had a couple of them already. They usually die when they are 2 years old. What about a dog? It ages and dies, possibly around 12-13 years old. Why do these animals even exist, lasting less than us? Evolution kept these animals as the fittest in their current environments, because it doesn't care about how long we or other beings last. The only purpose of us in the whole evolution scheme is that we are passing our genes to our descendants.

  It is simple, if we die before generating children, our gene history dies with us. Unless we generate another being, our genes will continue to flow through the population. Both dogs and hamsters reach sexual maturity at an earlier stage compared to humans. So, for the natural world, that is the purpose of life. And we humans trick this system a bit by creating methods to survive even after our fertile period.

  We escaped mostly from the Natural selection. We aren't preyed upon by any other species. We also created ways to avoid parasitic beings that kill, such as viruses and bacteria, with vaccines and medicines. With that, our lifespan increased and we are the only species that probably live even after our fertility is done. Have you heard about the Greenland Shark? The lifespan can reach up to 500 years, but they become fertile only after they reach 150 years old. Would you prefer being that instead of being human? "Let's wait more than 100 years, honey, so we can have a child!". I hope that I didn't teach the man who keeps making excuses to avoid having children to continue doing that.

  I am not arguing that every one of us should stop thinking about how to succeed in life, such as getting a house, travelling to an exotic country or achieving a position as CEO of a company. But maybe the answer for our life purpose is simpler than we think. We are just a small dot in a planet that is also a small dot in the middle of the universe. In addition, we are part of a species that escaped the natural laws and nature doesn't care about our death.

  Continuamos buscando o propósito da vida como humanos, mas talvez o propósito seja mais simples do que imaginamos. Filosoficamente falando, talvez cada um de nós precise encontrá-lo, apesar das dificuldades. No entanto, o significado natural da vida é algo que muitas pessoas esquecem. Ontem, eu estava ouvindo um podcast sobre os desafios da pesquisa antienvelhecimento, e está muito claro que a humanidade ainda luta contra a morte. Todos nós vivemos uma vez, e a vida não dura para sempre. Mas o que há de natural nisso?

  Você já teve um hamster? Eu já tive alguns. Eles geralmente morrem aos 2 anos de idade. E um cachorro? Ele envelhece e morre, possivelmente por volta dos 12 ou 13 anos. Por que esses animais existem, durando menos que nós? A evolução manteve esses animais como os mais aptos em seus ambientes atuais, porque não se importa com quanto tempo nós ou outros seres duramos. O único propósito de nós em todo o esquema da evolução é passar nossos genes para nossos descendentes.

  É simples: se morrermos antes de gerar filhos, nossa história genética morre conosco. A menos que geremos outro ser, nossos genes continuarão a fluir pela população. Tanto cães quanto hamsters atingem a maturidade sexual mais cedo em comparação com os humanos. Então, para o mundo natural, esse é o propósito da vida. E nós, humanos, enganamos um pouco esse sistema, criando métodos para sobreviver mesmo após o nosso período fértil.

  Escapamos em grande parte da seleção natural. Não somos predados por nenhuma outra espécie. Também criamos maneiras de evitar seres parasitas que matam, como vírus e bactérias, com vacinas e medicamentos. Com isso, nossa expectativa de vida aumentou e somos a única espécie que provavelmente vive mesmo depois que nossa fertilidade acaba. Você já ouviu falar do tubarão-da-groenlândia? A expectativa de vida pode chegar a 500 anos, mas eles só se tornam férteis depois de atingirem 150 anos. Você preferiria ser isso em vez de ser humano? "Vamos esperar mais de 100 anos, querida, para termos um filho!". Espero não ter ensinado o homem que continua dando desculpas para não ter filhos a continuar fazendo isso.

  Não estou argumentando que todos nós devemos parar de pensar em como ter sucesso na vida, como comprar uma casa, viajar para um país exótico ou alcançar o cargo de CEO de uma empresa. Mas talvez a resposta para o nosso propósito de vida seja mais simples do que pensamos. Somos apenas um pequeno ponto em um planeta que também é um pequeno ponto no meio do universo. Além disso, fazemos parte de uma espécie que escapou das leis naturais e a natureza não se importa com a nossa morte.
