A little bit of adrenaline injection while driving a car.

I started to drive cars when I was 18 years old. I got my first license when I was that age so right now I have an experience of 18 years driving, precisely half of my life. I have been using the car as part of my life since then and despite being a good tool to get into places, mostly in places without good public transport coverage like the places where I lived, the car can be a machine that can lead to death. I just found that in Canada the number of deaths per year in car collisions is around 5.8 deaths for every 100,000 people and in Brazil it is 23.4 deaths for every 100,000 people (Wikipedia). That difference may be explained by cultural differences and also by more vehicles being used, Brazil has much more dense cities compared to Canada, so more probability of an accident. Anyway, I experienced many adventures in both countries, however I had some minor car crashes in Brazil only, for now during these almost 7 years in Canada never had a crash with other vehicles, just winter problems.

I can cite many experiences in Brazil while driving. Maybe the biggest one was driving through a natural catastrophe. In Rio de Janeiro we don't have snow, hurricanes, or earthquakes, but there are months of the year with lots of rain, mainly around March and April ( already entering Fall). One time I went with my parents to an event, and we ended up going with two cars, since I went directly from work, it was around the 2010s. This event was far from home, in another region of the city. When we were at this event it started to pour a lot of rain. When we decided to go home the chaos had started, and most of the roads were flooded. At first, I needed to cross a tunnel to go back to the region where I lived, and all the cars were mostly stopped without moving because the exit of the tunnel was a region flooded and the cars weren't going through that way, I took around 2 hours to cross a tunnel that usually takes 10 minutes to cross it, after crossing it I took another way to avoid this flooded region but in the end, I ended up in another region that was also flooded. After passing in multiple places that I thought my car was going to stop because of the amount of water, I got home. I left the event at 8 pm and got home around 1 am, in a travel that would take normally up to 1 hour (depending on the huge traffic).

In Canada, I can cite an adventure as well. 3 weeks ago, we had a big storm in here. I didn't go to work and worked at home that day. However, the next day I decided to go to work. My way in was already challenging, I needed to get a 6 km gravel road to get to work, and it was all white couldn't see the difference between the road and the ditch. But still, I could reach my workplace. However, on the way back through the same road, there was a car coming the other way. I reduced my car and pulled a bit to the right to give some space, in that moment I felt my car sliding to the right, and I got into the ditch. One of the wheels wasn't touching the ground so It was impossible to come out by myself. I was lucky that many co-workers were passing by at that time, since it is a road mostly used to get into my work, nobody else uses it. One colleague gave me a ride to my daughter's daycare, and then we went back home walking since it wasn't a so far distance. I tried to call some towing companies but it was usually during snow events they get so busy that sometimes it takes days to get rescues. Luckily I had two friends who offered help, both had pickup trucks and we went that night to pull my car using their vehicles. It worked and everything ended fine.

Posso citar muitas experiências no Brasil enquanto dirigia.

No entanto, no dia seguinte, decidi ir trabalhar. Funcionou e tudo acabou bem.

These experiences probably were some of the most intense ones, but I could write some other posts with other examples about car adventures when I felt terrified and some adrenaline started to be in my blood vessels. I wish I could use fewer cars so at least adventures like that could be reduced. But I don't have any forecast of not needing any car anymore unless I move to a place where I can use public transport to work and to do my daily errands. So for now I just need to learn with many of these experiences learned, like also the other experience in another post when I got stuck in the snow.

It's a good thing there was no serious harm done to you when the car rolled into the ditch and you were also lucky you got someone to transport you back home. It just all calls for more carefulness though it won't take away all the chances of a crash happening to anyone, but we have to just do our part. Thanks for sharing this experience and have a great weekend.

If I were in your place I might not decide to go outside. It's risky. Fortunately, it was a busy road and you received help. What if there were no vehicle and people to help you.

Driving can be more of an adventure that you might like at times. At least it's a little safer in Canada than Brazil! I've had the stuck car happen to me too, never any fun....

it is...if water gets into the motor...in general I assess the situation, if I feel that I can go , I go, in the example in the text many times I stopped and waited a bit for the water go down.

Your reflection on using fewer cars is so important. It's something we should all consider for the sake of the environment and our safety. Keep sharing your experiences!
