The Graveyard, Wari. Dhaka.

_DSC6361.jpeg

The Dhaka Christian Cemetery which is still in use today, was established by Portuguese traders in the 17th century. Less than 1% of the population are Christian, 91% are Sunni Muslims, 8% Hindu

There are older graves and new burials taking place, when someone shuffle off their mortal coil.

There are many notable graves here, that I just could not find, soldiers, airmen and the first female balloonist to rise above the ground in Bangladesh.

The tomb of "Columbo Sahib"

The largest and probably oldest structure in the graveyard, what would have been an elaborate and grand mausoleum, it is said to be the resting place of "Columbo Sahib"

Nagaphon Ghat’, Dhaka, 1787, showing the earliest image of Columbo Sahib’s mausoleum

_DSC6339.jpeg

But no one really knows the true identity of "Columbo Sahib"

_DSC6336.jpeg

Some say that he was a merchant who came to Dhaka from Colombo, Ceylon. (Now Sri Lanka) to trade and became very wealthy. becoming known locally as Columbo Sahib.

_DSC6337.jpeg

There are no inscriptions at all ever found to even give a hint.

It is now in a complete state of disrepair, being reclaimed by nature, the gripping vines perhaps holding it together

Elizabeth David, nee, Manook was the daughter of a wealthy Armenian merchant. She bore eight children in her short life, dying aged 29 of cholera. her husband Marcar was known as the "Merchant-Prince of East Bengal". Just a year after her death, he left with his children to live in London, he died in London in 1893 and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.

Her tomb is said to be the finest surviving example of Christian funerary monument in marble in the country.

It is fascinating how time leaves its mark on these places, weaving the stories of merchants, soldiers and pioneers into a single silent narrative.

My word! You do get around don't you!!

Poor Elizabeth! Your post led me to research into her, good to see her descendants are to be found and one is in Bristol!

It sounded like Dhaka back in those days were a bit like Shanghai a century ago

Wanderlust! I guess it is what I do, got to spend the kids inheritance on something LOL,
The thoughts of ancient Shanghai, evoke fantastic thoughts and images in my head, I wish I was a time traveller far too often.

Descendants in Bristol, this world is so small, they are nearly your neighbours!

I like visiting graveyards, especially the one in my hometown when I am there.
This one is peculiar, a bit of everything (for example the drying laundry 😳). Interesting stories of people and their fate... Columbo Sahib had an awesome mausoleum, even though it is reclaimed by nature, the once magnificent construction can be still appreciated.

Cheers, graveyards are mystical calming places, I love them, I love to try and find out about who is living there, I get a sense of satisfaction when I do.

I observed how odd and old the cemetery seemed, it had been there for 100,000 years. The names are engraved on the cross rather than on a tombstone, as is customary in the Philippines. Scary though hehe 😄

However, I'd still love to take a visit to my mom's tomb. Even I am uncomfortable in my surroundings.

The air is stunningly gorgeous, the kind that gives one a sense of calmness and contemplation. The building's architecture is equally stunning its tall, lean structure and marvelous craftsmanship turn it into a work of art. The whole facility radiates an aura of peacefulness and awe-inspiring splendor.

The tomb of "Columbo Sahib" really caught my attention! Why does no one know about his identity? If he was buried here I'm sure all the people in the village won't stop looking for answers, haha. It's nice to see post like this, it's unique and it led people to Google, haha curious of what had happened years ago.

The mausoleum is impressive - pity nature has claimed it and no one knows much about its occupant. With the washing nearby it is a reminder that life and death are intertwined. I also like to visit graveyards but I do not usually make photos.
