The beit almin of the Mountain Jews.

"May her soul be bound in the bundle of life"

What a stunning young lady, life is cruel, life is short, for some.

What is the first thing you notice? A sea of faces, a multitude of faces looking back at you from the tombstones. The faces of dead men, dead women, residents in the blackness of eternity.

I love to see these vintage snaps of the dead.

The style of tombstone, featuring detailed portraits and symbols of wealth, is characteristic of so-called "gangster graveyards" in SSR's .......who knows

If you spot Jewish tombstones that have a plastic covering.... It is a custom, to only unveil the tombstone a year after the burial.

I shall leave you with this... four tombstones together: mother Golda, father Ephraim and children Eliya and Hava. Eliya was seven and Hava was five when the whole family died in a plane crash in Russia in 2008... They were just passengers on Aeroflot flight 821. The cause of the crash was given as pilot error and alcohol consumption... Hmmmm???

Among the passengers was Russian Colonel General Gennady Troshev, an adviser to the President of Russia and commander of the North Caucasus Military District (including Chechnya) during the Second Chechen War... Form your own conclusions!

Thanks for visiting my page, I am pleased to make your acquaintance. this is Stephen aka, @grindle, happily retired, travelling the world snapping away. My weapon of choice is currently a Nikon Z6.jpg

I was absolutely amazed. I've visited cemeteries, I love them, but I've never seen anything like this, giant photographs of the deceased on the gravestones as if they were looking at and observing the world. It's kind of scary.

But also, the story you tell about the family that died in that accident is shocking, as is the situation surrounding it.

I have always been fascinated by cemeteries because they contain the energies of those who have passed away, and depending on that, there are sensitivities in the air. I loved and was surprised by your post! Thank you!

There exist plenty cases like that in life - they are just not noticeable so well, as at this cetrain cemetary spot.

It's true, seeing them all together is impressive.

Engraving or photo on head stone definitely brings more to the fore of those buried.

Nice presentation, photograph is something we don't appear to do here at all.

Sometimes the engravings already have been erased and un-readable - but the portrait still very readable and spectacular!

Nice touch to keep the person alive through a picture for generations to follow.

"gangster graveyards" in SSR's

we cant state that by the overlook view, but this type of tomb decorations does not cheap at all, quite the opposite - means, the guys and their famly had wealth more than enaf, to construct them. and in the (late) former USSR the Black / Shady part of economy arose greatly - and especially this happened far from center, in the southern republics. So, Georgia, Armenya, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan - indeed had a lot of corruption and criminal elements incorporated into economy > and, thus, a lot of gangsters and a lot of welthful families. . . and corpses from time to time as well :D

It was only now I heard of these, I have seen many across the former USSR, but didn't realise what they could have been..... and all the guys were young

These are eerie I think, imagine at a dusk, be like living in a zombie movie. Those gangsters are a shady bunch, and that was cool about the plastic and the unveiling a year later! Thanks for this, love to learn something new every day
