Shait-Gumbuz Masjid. Bagerhat. Somebody get the abacus out
Now then, now then, now then, some sources quote the mosque as having 77 domes not the 60 it is known for.
Close but no cigar, there are actually 81 domes, as each corner has a turret, domed of course. What a schoolboy error!
At the time of foundation the city was known as 'Khalifalabad', and there were over a dozen or so mosques built, now standing mainly in ruins; the 81,77, 60 domed mosque remains standing and active. It is the largest multi domed mosque in Bangladesh
The mosque inside is quite austere, divided into many aisles with slender stone columns, and arches that support the roof.
Interesting fact alert: Get this there are 60 columns, yup sixty, not 77 or 81. SIXTY!
Prayering
At first I thought the women were admiring the soft furnishings, I then realised that under Islam women are second class citizens, and are segregated in a small corner for their prayers.
People for there are always people
Hanging out with the cool kids
I lost count of the number of selfies I was asked to pose for, graciously giving my bestest smile, the gentle folk were as fascinated with us as we were with them
The majority had amazing command of the English language, probably far better than most of Scotland, Newcastle and Liverpool
An inquisitive look as they were indulging in selfies....
but without me asking, they soon rushed over and we swapped snaps

Wonderful captures…
Love the portraits of the people so up close.
Fascinating that they were as intrigued with the group of visitors as you with them.
Have a great new week.
!HUG
Yes, they don't get many "white faces" in Bangladesh, as opposed to India which has been on the tourist trail for years, I am sure it will all change.
have a great week yourself....in the snow?
It will indeed all change. One day tourists will go there a lot.
Actually… I am preparing an escape from the snow. (Yep, still snowy and freezing up here)
I get up at 2:15am tonight (maybe I even stay up haha) and after a long drive to the airport and 3 flights ✈️ I reach warmer grounds 🥰 I can’t wait. A break from the cold and renovating for a while.
Lovely, where are you bound?
Thanks. Exploring southern France. Starting in Bordeaux… going slowly east.
I needed 3 planes to get here, the fun things from living north rather remotely haha
Remote is a good word! Plenty of good wine and food down there and just in case you are getting homesick
Have a great weekend
Yes, the food and wine is awesome here… I will be truly enjoying the next weekssss.
Haha thanks 😋😂 I don’t think I will be getting homesick…
Have a great weekend too.

The mosque with many domes - gorgeous photos. I actually like the simple, austere interior. I really enjoy your people photos. You must have had a field day. I enjoyed visiting Asia. I don't know if I mentioned that I took out my sabbatical albums because of your recent posts. Have you been to Bhutan btw?
Beautiful friendly people - it is good that they were curious about you (the visitor with the camera) as much as you were about them.
Cheers, I do enjoy people snapping, and there, well they were forming a queue!! LOL
No Bhutan is a place not yet visited, nor Tibet....maybe one day, who knows. Something is in the dark receses of my head about your Asia adventures, it is good to se a snap and tie it to a memory.
