Riding the rickshaw. Puran, Dhaka. Bangladesh. #109 street
What an absolutely splendid time sitting behind this chap in the back of his pedal rickshaw. he was a scrawny old guy muscles of steel, not an ounce of fat on him.
Mind you I guess hauling big lumps behind him all day everyday helps! A slightly padded bench seat, no suspension, thankfully I had it all to myself. The roads were uneven and the whole damn thing clanked and rattled when it came crashing back down after each pothole or speed bump in the road, bruised but not battered!
Enveloped in a cacophony of noise, cars honking, motor cycles revving, cars honking was not enough to stop the puller from dodging in and out, shouting to anyone who tried to get in front of him
Dhaka’s air quality ranks among the worst in the world and the roads are so congested that traffic has slowed to almost walking speeds of less than 5 mph.
But what a once in a lifetime awesome experience
Mono Offerings
With 70,000 people to a square mile crime, Dhaka is not found in the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world, the city boasts 50 police stations with a force of 34,000. Compared to london, a population of just over 8 million with 33,000 police officers.
I guess though with recorded figures of 119 murder cases in August, and 148 in September (2024). there is a fucking lot happening!
It is not just a place for the traveller to stick his lens in, Old Dhaka has many industrial operations and warehouses amidst the hustle and bustle
These warehouses often store flammable and hazardous substances like hydrogen peroxide, thinners, and toluene. Major accidents can and do take place.
Must be fun trying to navigate a fire truck or ambulance through these streets.
