Juma Mosque, Shamakhi. Az.
So the "historic" Juma Mosque of Shamakhi beckoned it is said to be the oldest in Azerbaijan.

Built in 8th century....rebuilt in the 12th century.....rebuilt in the 18th century.....rebuilt in 1902.....and finally in 2010.
Hardly fucking old then is it?

"The Juma Mosque of Shamakh was built in 743. It was severely damaged by earthquakes in 1859 and 1902, and again during the Armenian Genocide of 1918 when Armenian nationalists set it on fire. Extensive restoration was carried out in accordance with President Aliyev’s decree between 2010 and 2013."

These rusty old architectural elements would look better with clematis or sweet peas growing on them

As far as see it the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is deep rooted from history, a claim of genocide by Az a proven genocide suffered by Armenia. I believe I shall take the Armenian view, their schools do not preach and brainwash the children to hate as do the Azerbaijanis

After following us inside the once attentive caretaker, now knowing we were not here for nefarious reasons, took a nap.

Highly decorative ceiling

Feature lighting

Inside this place was wonderful as it was nicely cold , a welcome relief from the heat outside

I wonder if they have a ride on Dyson or an army of those AI robots to hoover this place

Lotys of fairy stories here

An ornate Mihrab, the focal point for them that prey, if points towards mecca.

A stunning bush with a splendid red bloom

and some straggly ones that need a prune.
There is nothing worse than an unkempt bush!

I’ve always loved the architecture of mosques and, in general, everything from the Arab world. Those domes, those arches, all the detail, all the color… it’s amazing to me. And you captured it perfectly with your beautiful photographs. Thank you for sharing — you made me travel to Azerbaijan from home.
Cheers @ramon2024 thanks for dropping in and your positive vibes, yes I agree different cultures explored, appreciating their architecture and design
Always a pleasure!
👍🤘
It really doesn't look that ancient after all the renovations but it is cute. Though I mostly skip mosques, as I often feel unwanted there.
It is but these roots have little meaning outside of the territorial dispute for Karabakh, which has ended.
Imo. Armenia didn't care about Azerbaijani refugees from Karabakh for 30+ years - based on the right of force. Don't think they have any moral superiority over Azerbaijan after that, not to mention the support of Armenia for Putin's Russia's crimes all these years - voting in the UN for Russia, etc. This was a payment for having the right of force (with the help of Russia) over Azerbaijan. Rotten. Now, Armenia has decided to change its skin, and claims to smell like a flower.
The internationally recognized borders have been restored by Azerbaijan. I hope Azerbaijan will be wise enough not to continue the confrontation with Armenia and allow the whole region to leave this geopolitical spider web.
It certainly is a spiders web, I think a lot of countries were prepared to suck putin's cock in exchange for cheap gas and oil, and so called "security" as you sow, so shall you reap.
Juma Mosque still looks historical and relevant to Shamakhi although the multiple renovations made it lose some of its historical features. That was quite many renovations for a mosque who stood for generations and generation. Well, it was for sure for the sake of its structural stability. The architecture is still great from outside to the interior. Your photographs captured the soul of the mosque.
This one looks stunning and it takes a creative eye to see the pattern there.
And this shelf looks like calling all fairy stories warrior to read it. I am one of them. I wonder how fairy stories are told in your country and culture. For sure it is interesting and valuable. Thank you for sharing this @grindle ❤️

Love how you capture both the mosques history and its quirky details like imagining clematis on those rusty elements. The mix of ornate interiors and colorful blooms outside is stunning

I visited similar mosques during my trip to Edirne. The same ceiling paintings, columns... I wonder: maybe they were built by the same craftsmen?
They may have ben, skilled artisans without a doubt. Hope you are keeping well and your girls too
