Floating flower market, seriosuly? Amsterdam April 23

avatar

Apparently Bloemenmarkt on Singel canal is a renowned and famous market, selling all things from bulbs to tacky tourist tat wonderful souvenirs of Amsterdam.

It is the only floating flower market in the world existing since 1862.

I believed the hype. They lie.

It may have been floating in 1862, when traders travelled in their barges to sell their produce. Now it is just a row of greenhouse type buildings on CONCRETE.

All the kiosks seemed to be selling the same items at similar prices, the place was packed and then it started to rain, seriously rain. It was a good place to take shelter!!

I wonder who buys all this Junk and rubbish wonderful products, hand crafted by local artisans. Local to where I do not know!!!

_DSC1307.jpeg

I thought at first these must be genetically modified as I have never seen such vivid and bright colours on cacti before. Apparently not, I stand corrected

_DSC1322.jpeg

_DSC1321.jpeg

I had heard about this plant when I was in Cambodia, where it is native.

Why I didn't buy any.

A) Notoriously difficult to grow
B) It stinks like rotting meat
C) Only blooms every 15 or so years
D) I didn't want to put it to shame

Right I'm off.

Not good that Bloemenmarkt still advertises the location as a floating flower market when it in fact is not. They do have a lovely assortment of flowers, succulents and a variety of other touristy things for purchase.

I enjoyed your wonderful photographs and sense of humor! @grindle😊

By the way, your post qualifies for the hashtags #Marketfriday and #alwaysaflower

Flowers are a jewelry that God created to beautify this world. I really like this place of yours and you may not know that in my country there is also a floating market, that is Vietnam, where people not only sell flowers but almost everything. Their way of selling is also very unique. If you have a chance come to my country, it will be a place that will surprise you.

cheers @minhsubk18 , thanks for stopping by, yes I have visited your beautiful country, in 2006 I spent 3 weeks there travelling south from Hanoi, to Ho Chi Minh, then up the Mekong to Phnom Penh. I think I saw one of the floating markets,

Yep, the advert for this is wrong. A proper tourist trap.
Good you didn’t buy it in the end. The conditions need to be right to even grow it. But who want to, with such a smell… 😖
Have a great weekend 😎

I understand your disappointment, as sometimes our expectations don't match the reality. It's unfortunate that the experience didn't meet your initial excitement. However, it's important to remember that things can change over time. While the current state may not align with the historical charm of the past, it's still possible to find beauty and value in different aspects. Perhaps there are other aspects or features that can be appreciated in the present setting. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

Floating market, that is so fitting for Amsterdam. I wish I would have bought tulips to bring home when I was there. That would have been a nice souvenir.

The last plant would be cool for someone who like the challenge and has patience. But 15 years is too long for me. I'd forget about it for sure. Smells like rotting meat eh? that's different lol
There is probably some very interesting evolutionary reason for that smell. I wonder 🤔

The scent must attract some weird insects maybe? Yeah 15 years is no good to wait, I could be dead by then

tacky tourist tat wonderful souvenirs of Amsterdam

But if you come home without a bag full of tourist tat, did you even go on holiday...? 🤔

And yes 'floating' market is a tad misleading. I was expecting barges to be permanently moored and stationary. Using buildings located next to the River is fine, but then surely take the 'floating' name away.

Lovely pictures by the way, those multicolored cacti look pretty cool!

Growing from seed always hit and miss, bulbs a lot easier, penis plant I have never heard of, although I had a Carrion flower succulent that attracted flies with the stench, flowered more often as well.

yes, seeds are very hit and miss but a great sense of satisfaction when the little flowers burst into life.

If/When they burst into life one can count oneself lucky, most seeds in packets I have had no such luck!

If at first you don't succeed try try and try again. I seeded a selection of over 100 Cosmos seeds earlier this year, I have just planted out 18 LOL, a fairly good return

add to it:

E) The neighbour's cats would destroy it anyway

Gosh you went there to the non-floating market. I pass by and also wonder who buy all that nonsense. The bulbs are fine for souvenirs but that’s all.

Special find - that stinky plant. It’s unique but it attributes are not so endearing.
Nice photos as always.
