Away from the maddening crowds. Amsterdam April 23

avatar

Many moons ago I spent a lot of time in Amsterdam, I think the last time I was here was 2013, my god it has gone down hill, the city centre is a dump, litter and big bags of rubbish strewn everywhere, pushers loitering on street corners, cheap tacky shops and even the coffee shops now have bouncers on the door. I personally have fallen out of love with what was once one of my favourite European cities.

But still the crowds throng the streets, searching for that so called magic that they have been led to believe exists.

I went in search of something more enjoyable and where i didn't have to dodge pools of vomit on the pavement.

So a nice stroll along Prins Hendrikkade, from the Central Station to the Nemo science museum to enjoy the boats in Oosterdok.

Shot in the main from the Prins Hendrikkade embankment, Oosterdokseiland island, in the background, a development that has been ongoing for a number of years, now mostly completed. A mix of urban regeneration. More (un)affordable homes for the far and middle eastern investors to snap up

_DSC1192.jpeg

A mix of houseboats, some lived in, some empty rentals, and some steel hulled boats for the open seas

Some with their own grass lawns!

That is where I am heading, NEMO, cleverley constructed to look like a mahoosive ship.

Bikes and Amsterdam go hand in glove, fuck me you need to keep your wits about you when walking around, these twats think they own not only the road, the tramways, but the pavements too.

_DSC1183.jpeg

What life there lives in a micro-environment like that, they wonder if anything lives beyond the rubber ring. Much like our flat earth.

_DSC1202.jpeg

I wonder from where these time worn statues came from? Some majestic palace or stately building, saved from landfill, a wise investment no doubt for someone.

_DSC1219.jpeg

_DSC1216.jpeg

_DSC1247.jpeg

There was a promised cafe at the top of NEMO, toilets too!

_DSC1231.jpeg

_DSC1239.jpeg

and more pretty flowers to see, as we drank pretty good coffee from paper cups and scoffed apple cake so full of sugar I was hyped for the rest of the day.

"Where next?" asked my companion (nurse, carer, sensible side kick)

"The distant horizon beckons my love, a floating flower market"

Boat with grass, perhaps miniature putt-putt course 😗

Vereeniging is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa is where my uncle lived, do recognize some of the names not the vessels.

Difficult to learn Dutch but hearing it spoken it is such a melodic ( if that's the right word) sound

Afrikaans was compulsory second language throughout our schooling years, some classes even taught in that medium when too few English speaking were taking a particular topic.

Welsh can be proud they insisted on holding onto their language or it would have been lost.

Then this was a great place to go too after seeing the centre.
Love the statues of that old ship… awesome.
Those lions look like they came from a Chinese restaurant. They stand outside the door and you see it often.
Great captures @grindle 😎

well hello again, you have been either travelling laying floors or just no wifi?

That is a good point about the Chinese restaurant, I have seen similar.

Hello again @grindle 👋🏻😎
Let’s say all the above and then some hahaha 🤣
Moving countries… all the “fun” parts of that 🫣
The rental house fell through so needed to find last minute accommodation for the evening and last week hunting for a new rental in a country where there is a housing crisis.
Will catch up this weekend on comments… and post some updates on my crazy adventures from the last 2 weeks, coming week.

So you know the ones I mean. Would make sense… as you don’t just buy those around the corner 😉
Have an awesome weekend.

A floating flower market! How wonderful. It has been 20 years since I was last in Amsterdam. I'm sure I would be just as shocked, however your photos are beautiful and don't reveal the deterioration. So I can live with my happy memories

I totally understand what you say about the city center - it is not the cleanest as it is over runned by tourists. The city is trying to discourage visitors but that does not seem to work. However I am happy you could enjoy escaping to Nemo. Nice photos.
