@jonolson since you do not believe Jesus started the Catholic Church and left Peter in charge of it after he ascended to heaven, who started it and who was the 1st man in charge of it? And what church is the Church Jesus references as his?

Also Catholic just means Universal. Most of the ancient churches were Catholic, all the Eastern Orthodox Churches are part of the Catholic Rite. There are 24 Churches included in the Catholic Rite.

Catholic is just a term that means whole or universal. The Catholic Church was the church started by Peter though the first documented use of the word Catholic is from 110 A.D. There was no significant splits in the church until 1054.
