FOR FRIENDSHIP, NO GOODBYES: SENDING OFF A DEAR FRIEND WITH LOVE
Hello everyone on this community,
On April 12, 2025, an evening heavy with bittersweet emotions unfolded as we gathered for a despedida party for one of my dearest friends, my kumare, who is about to embark on a new chapter of her life. It was not the kind of farewell any of us had prepared for, but we knew in our hearts it was a moment we needed to honor — for her, for us, and for the many years of memories we shared.
The decision to hold the celebration came abruptly, much like the way her plans to leave the Philippines fell into place so quickly. Just days before, she had confided that she might not be leaving anytime soon. Yet when her papers were finally approved, everything had to be settled in a rush. Despite the whirlwind of preparations and emotions, our circle of friends agreed — we couldn’t let her go without spending one last night together, laughing, crying, and holding on to the bond we have built over the years.
That night, the air felt warm and tender, not just because of the summer heat but because of the closeness we shared in that room. As we sat around the table, the hours seemed to melt away into heartfelt conversations and fits of laughter that echoed with the same joy we felt years ago when we first became friends. We talked endlessly, not just about her journey ahead but also about the silly, beautiful, and unforgettable memories that tied us all together — our first coffee dates, the sleepless nights planning surprise parties, the times we leaned on each other when life felt too heavy to bear.
Every now and then, one of us would grow quiet, realizing how different things would feel without her presence. Her laughter, her warmth, and her ability to make even the dullest days bright had been constants in our lives. It hurt deeply to imagine her thousands of miles away. Yet, as much as the sadness lingered in our hearts, it was overshadowed by a deeper emotion — pride. We knew she was destined for greater things. Teaching in the United States was not just a job; it was a dream she had worked for tirelessly, a dream she deserved.
We reassured her that no distance could break what we have. “You go chase your dreams,” one of us said, trying to keep the tears at bay, “we’ll always be here cheering you on.” There was no doubt that each of us meant it with all our hearts.
As the night wore on, the laughter softened into silence, and the conversations slowed into gentle smiles. It was hard to say goodbye, but we knew this wasn’t really the end. This was a celebration of her courage, her new journey, and the love that would continue to bind us across oceans and time zones.
She may be leaving, but the memories, and our friendship, will remain unshakable. This last photo taken before going home with our families.
While on the road, we stop by here and taking photo also and bid goodbyes.
