The Emotion Called Love

I usually ponder on how love is an emotion that doesn't follow laid down rules or personal principles.

What do I mean?

Sometimes/most times, we make lists of the things we expect in a partner. These itemized qualities are like specifications a person would have to fulfill before being considered worthy to be our partner.
It could range from physical attributes like height, body shape, size, complexion or even more unexpected things like occupation, tribe, academic qualifications sometimes even financial capacity is factored in, lol.

Surprisingly, a lot of times, we ended up falling for someone who doesn't meet these criteria, either entirely or partially.
In the past, I have ensured to make mental notes of qualities my friends outlined as their criteria in partner selection and funny enough, I observed that none of them ended up with someone who ticked all the boxes. A good number of them ended up with partners that ticked less boxes than planned. I am no exception.😅

We may be looking out for a physical attribute while making these plans only to be mesmerized by an action or attitude that enchants us despite the person not meeting up to our expectations.
This would make us realise that there are other necessary or loveable characters apart from the ones we listed and this character may be so vital that the list becomes inconsequential.

For me, I believe that it is important to listen to the heart when it comes to matters of love, not discarding the head.

Being rigid and unyielding insisting on the previous laid down criteria in a situation that involves love may not produce good fruit especially in the long run. This is because some of the expectations we have are hinged on the physical or financial which can always turnaround and hence making choices based on attributes that are largely inconsistent is not advisable.

Trying to look at old partners, and asking them to mention the criteria they had while choosing themselves, one would immediately observe that most of not all of those attributes have been washed away by the years, but the love remains because it is more important.

The best partners are not always those who fulfilled all the criteria, a lot depends on both partners and not just one person.
Understanding plays a pivotal role in every relationship and as such, there should be flexibility in our dealings to ensure the collective happiness of the couple.

I believe that if one begins to make choices before falling in love, then definitely, this person is being careful and planning something that is not meant to be planned.

In my opinion, falling for someone who despite not meeting all your selection criteria is proof that the heart wants what it wants, because those lists are actually prepared with the head and not the heart while the heart should be given front seat in such matters.

Remember to always crosscheck the choices of the heart with the head, there is no need to follow the heart blindly, it could also mislead although very rarely.
