You have learnt your lesson and it is never too late to know how to save up because university life is not like secondary school life where if not everything is made available for you. And I saw one thing from what you said,even though you move with people who spend more than you did, according to what you said, you were never pressured and you didn't ask for more from your parents and that shows a contented side of you.
