Wandering Brazil X: Parque Municipal das Cachoeiras
Welcome back to my Brazilian travel journal and to the final post from the beautiful island of Ilhabela. We had tickets for a night bus to Rio de Janeiro, but unrelenting rain forced us to abandon our morning plans—chilling on the beach and then a cruise to a whale‑spotting site. Ultimately, the only marine mammal we saw was a humpback whale at the edge of a pier. Even so, there was still a place to explore: the Parque Municipal das Cachoeiras. Municipal Waterfall Park.
The park lies just a few kilometers from the harbor and is reachable by town bus. Don’t expect extensive visitor services: the information center staff speak only Portuguese (they clearly see few foreign guests) and have little to tell about the park anyway.
There’s still something to see, though. A small exhibition on the island’s electrification history sits at the base of Cachoeira da Água Branca. They are not ready for foreigners either, but the lady there switched to a cute Portuñol when she learned we don’t really speak Portuguese. Entrance is free—you only sign the guestbook and note your state of origin if you're Brazilian. I wrote “República Tcheca,” which amused the staff; apparently, I was their first Czech visitor, and I suspect they would have trouble locating my country on the map.
Written Portuguese feels closer to Spanish than the spoken language, so with her help, I could follow most explanations. I learned that the earliest street lamps burned whale oil sourced from local whalers. After a brief kerosene‑lamp period, the town council installed a diesel generator, this one. Attempts at small‑scale hydroelectric turbines on the waterfalls proved unreliable—water flow varies too much with rainfall—so now the municipality takes electricity from the mainland.
What I appreciated most was the relaxed atmosphere. You’re expected to have tea or coffee and chat with the staff. The coffee was excelent by the way.
The second waterfall flooded the path due to the all-day-long rain. We still managed to ford to the other side to admire the lush vegetation—and we even spotted a few cheerful marmosets, the small monkeys native to Brazil.
Soon it was time to pick up our bags (we had left them at our accommodation) and catch the ferry back to the mainland. My Brazilian journal will continue from there next time. Stay tuned!

Your pictures did justice to the waterfall. It can be annoying when rain comes along to disrupt your plans. How about next time just play or try to have fun in the rain 😁
Well, I was some 10 thousand kilometres from home and wanted to seize the day anyway :)
Happy Travels

Bzzzrrr!

Dude, I gotta tell you something fun. When I was a little kid, my grandfather rescued one of those tiny monkeys from a school. They kept it as a pet, and for some reason or another the monkey had lost the ability to move one arm.
Now grandpa, being a vet, took this monkey, named it Martin, and began a rehab process of sorts. Daily massages, and slow movements. Keep in mind, Martin was tiny, the smallest of the Amazonian mini monkeys. The ones you took a picture of, are the "big cousins".
Anyways, granda thought up a trick so that Martin would allow him to perform the treatment. He gave Martin Whisky. It worked, it worked amazing well. Martin loved Whisky so much, he then became a drunk.
I must have been 8 years old at this point, Martin must have been living with Grandpa for a decade, maybe a little less, when Martin was stolen from the house. My mom speculates he was lured with alcohol. Ha!
But imagine, a monkey that fits in your shirt pocket drunk all the time, because he keeps on sneaking into your bar and opening the micro bottles.
lol, that almost calls for an entire post :) share this story with the world, or it remains rather unnoticed here in comments :)
hahhaha maybe i will... you know, i thought it said i wasn't following you.. so i clicked follow, and it unfollowed. the node im using must be fakenewsy or something.
No worries, I saw you re-followed instantly :)
This place is very beautiful, especially the small river and waterfalls here. I really like them.
I guess it’s called the beautiful island for a reason :)
Yeah
Wow this place is really beautiful. You managed to capture the beauty of a very calm and peaceful place. What you said is absolutely right, my friend. The view is so perfect ❤️🙏
What you say is true that the beauty of the scenery is very calm and peaceful you are extraordinary to visit this beautiful place, 🥰
The site are looking so calm and beautiful
Even with the rain messing up your original plans, this day still sounds like such a peaceful little adventure. There’s something charming about quiet museums, friendly staff, and unexpected marmoset sightings! Also, being the first Czech visitor? That’s a cool little travel flex!
Well, this museum is basically one room, but it wasn't quiet :) Brazil ain't a quiet country :)

You are most welcome @godfish👍😘 - Great to see you had a nice time in Brazil!
Amazing
You really got around. We've found the Google Lens good for translating signs, but then you need a data connection.
We've seen whales in a couple of places. Always exciting.
When I travel outside the EU, I buy a data eSim through Revolut - it's quite affordable, and it works great.
It's a pity you didn't get to see the whales. They were under the sea with the little mermaid Ariel. 😄
I love the freshness of the place and the waterfall. Thank you for virtually taking me on this trip.
I guess they did whatever they usually do, they hardly mind the rain. It's just that the whale-spotting ships remained in the harbor :)
My pleasure! There's still like 10 posts to come, stay tuned! Then I might have something from Budapest, Hungary, and from Gratz and Maribor I'm about to visit for the Hive Meetup there :)
😂 Wow, you're busy... I've got popcorn ready here.
:)
Its looks like you had a great time traveling to Brazil Friend, that is a perfect place to visit because of the wonderful views we can see there.
Oh yes, I enjoyed Brazil.
Despite of being native from Brazil, these marmosets aren’t native from the southeast of the country! They are originally from the central and northern part and they were brought by humans to these other regions where the grown and competed with local native primates like the golden tamarin! So they are considered invasive species in rio and sao paulo!
I'm glad you liked the post :)
That sounds like quite an adventure, and spotting that humpback whale at the pier is pretty special. It looks real. Thanks for sharing your travels; it's been great to see these awesome places. Have a great day!
It's not really special, the statue is always there ;)
For me, not seeing this huge statue is special. I think if you always see it, then it’s not special anymore. Hahaha!
This is a real nature trip man. I've heard that Brazil is very good in terms of natural beauty but I haven't had the chance to visit it yet. I hope I can see it one day and then I'll tag you in my posts 😂
It's worth a visit for sure, and getting around is extremely affordable there :) On the other hand, we only saw a fraction of it withing the three weeks of our stay - it's huge.
Love the beauty of waterfall slowly dripping its way along the slope of the rock. The old kerosene lamp has similarities to what we used to have here. Interesting fact about the use of street lamp at this place long time ago. The rainforest hosting different creatures - flora and fauna, is indeed a treasure of this place.
Lovely waterfall pics!!! The park is beautiful, as is the entire landscape. An excellent tour of the site's flora and fauna. It was a very enjoyable experience.
I'm glad you liked it :)
