The Savior of Tired Saturdays: 'Uchoten Aliens' / 疲れた土曜の救世主『有頂天エイリアンズ』

Last Saturday night, I had a part-time job.

That day, due to a staff shortage, I was asked to work at a store a bit farther from home than usual. It was a short shift, and the work was the same, so I agreed to it. But… my partner that day was a male student from a university whom I’d never met before, and communication with him was tough, leaving me a bit exhausted😂

Normally, I work at a store closer to home on fixed days and times, so my work partner is usually the same. I often share shifts with female students from universities, who are all excellent and pleasant, making work enjoyable. But this Saturday was different. My partner that day—whether he was shy, didn’t want to talk to me, or just wasn’t interested in conversation at all, I couldn’t tell—would only answer my questions briefly and end the conversation there. No expansion, just tough and draining. Eventually, it felt like I was unilaterally interviewing him, and I got tired and stopped trying to talk. Without conversation, even a short shift feels like an eternity🕰️

So, I left work completely worn out. I stopped by a convenience store and was looking at the drink fridge when a can of “Uchoten Aliens” (meaning Ecstatic Aliens) beer caught my eye. The name was great, and the retro Ultraman-series-like design was totally my style, so I put it in my basket without hesitation. I also bought a can of Suntory beer for my husband, who’s been working non-stop even on weekends lately (I didn’t drink that one, but he said it was delicious and enjoyed it).

I prepared some cheese and nuts and cracked open the can.“Uchoten Aliens” is made by Yoho Brewing. It’s a Hazy IPA with an alcohol content of 6%. The colorful design with alien graphics made me expect a cute, fruity taste, but when I tried it, it felt more like a strong herbal tea... the aroma was amazing!

While watching Reigen Doshi on U-NEXT and sipping the beer, I started to forget about my work partner. When a conversation doesn’t flow, I tend to wonder if it’s my lack of communication skills… but that’s not always the case. It’s impossible to get along perfectly with everyone. If I can get along with 70% or 80% of people without issues, that’s enough. Maybe even 50% is fine! 😝

Thinking about that, I was soothed by the beer and the movie on that Saturday night.

先週の土曜の夜はパートがありました。

その日は欠員が出たため、いつもとは違う少し遠い店舗への出勤を頼まれていました。短時間だし、仕事内容は同じなので引き受けましたが・・・その日の相方は初対面の大学生の男の子で、コミュニケーションが取りづらくてちょっと疲れてしまいました。

普段は家から近い店舗で、決まった曜日、決まった時間帯で働くので、相棒もほぼ固定です。私は大学生の女の子たちと一緒にシフトに入ることが多く、みんな優秀で感じが良く、楽しく仕事させてもらっていました。でも、この土曜日は違いました。

相方の彼は、人見知りなのか、私と話したくないのか、そもそも会話に興味がないのか分からないけど、私が話しかけても質問に答えるだけで会話が終わってしまう。全く広がらず、しんどい・・・逆に話し掛けてゴメンみたいな気持ちになってくる😂しまいには私が一方的にインタビューしてるみたいになってきて、疲れて話すのをやめました。会話がないと、短時間の仕事でも永遠のように感じられます🕰️

そんなわけで、へとへとで退勤。コンビニに寄って飲み物の冷蔵庫を眺めてたら、『有頂天エイリアンズ』のビール缶が目に飛び込んできました。名前も非常にいいし、昭和のウルトラマンシリーズみたいな絵柄が私の好み過ぎて、迷わずカゴに入れました。最近、土日も仕事続きの夫にも、サントリーのビールを1缶買いました（そちらは飲まなかったけど、夫は美味しいと喜んでいました）。

チーズとナッツを用意して、早速開けてみました。

「有頂天エイリアンズ」の製造元はヤッホーブルーイング。ビアスタイルは、ヘイジーIPA、アルコール度数は6パーセント。宇宙人の絵柄とカラフルなデザインから可愛らしい味を想像していましたが、飲んでみると強いハーブティーみたいな感じ？香りがすごく良い！

U-NEXTで「霊幻道士」を観ながら飲んでたら、パートの相方のことはどうでもよくなってきました。会話が弾まないと、自分のコミュ力不足だろうか… と考えがちですが、そうとも限りません。むしろ、全ての人とうまくやっていくことなんて不可能。7割、8割の人と問題なく付き合えれば充分です。いや、5割でいいかもしれん。

そんなことを考えながら、ビールと映画に癒された土曜の夜でした。
