Visit to the Sacred Museum of Caracas 🤓 [ESP/ENG]
Has anyone ever told you about a place they'd like to visit, but in the end, you're the one who ends up going? Well, that's exactly what happened to us. My sister-in-law told me she wanted to visit the Sacro Museum because she had seen some videos about it on Instagram. Since we were looking for something to do so we wouldn't have to spend the day at home, we decided to copy her plan 😅.

I lived in Caracas for a few years and never felt compelled to visit this museum, perhaps partly because, being small, I somewhat underestimated the power of its history to surprise us. This place was formerly a cemetery and later the headquarters of the Episcopal School. According to its history, it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1981 and, after a restoration process, opened its doors as a museum in 1993.

Entering this building is like taking a peek into the past, but a more artistic past, with colonial and republican sculptures, devotional images, paintings by the great masters of sacred art in Venezuela and America, liturgical gold and silverwork, priestly vestments, and historical documents that showcase the cultural richness that characterized the capital's art and spirituality.

The area where some gravestones are preserved is a little neglected and could be better utilized in terms of landscaping, because it is the central part of the site and has the best lighting. On the other hand, it is a little disturbing to know that you are walking through a place that served as a cemetery and who knows how many human remains still lie beneath.

I must admit that I am quite clumsy, so I had to walk very carefully and try not to get too close to the pieces, because, imagine, many of them date back to the 17th century. You have to practice self-control when you are there, because everything looks so interesting that it makes you want to touch the pieces to see them in more detail.

When we reached the part that was used as a prison for clergymen who committed crimes against religion, morality, or “good customs,” my mother-in-law said she noticed a very heavy atmosphere and that even the hairs on her body stood on end. However, my husband and I only felt a little claustrophobic because of how small and narrow the place was.

Experiencia recomendada ✨
And so we come to the end of this short but interesting tour. Admission is $4, but it includes access to the other two museums in the area, so I think it's a reasonable price. Recommended experience ✨

It is fascinating how life leads us to unexpected discoveries. Your experience at the Sacred Museum resonates with the idea that beauty and history are often closer than we think. The duality between the sacred and the sombre enriches our understanding of the world, reminding us that every place has its own narrative. Learning to appreciate our surroundings, even in their complexity, is a true act of respect for our heritage. Without a doubt, curiosity opens doors we never imagined. ✨i
