Traditional Bubu Dress for Mother-in-law

Happy New week dear lovely needl1ework Monday creators and fellow Hivers, glad to make it to another exciting Monday, wishing everyone a pleasant week ahead.

To start my week I made this traditional bubu dress for my neighbour's mother-in-law. It's funny how I said I wanted to stay low key in this new environment I moved in to, as someone with an introverted personality, but somehow my sewing projects always calls the attention which is not a bad thing either, so far I'm happy that my neighbours here are really nice people, making me feel comfortable around them.

I've had a few of them bring their clothes for amendment, others want me to make something new and beautiful out of their fabric, and there is one who wants me to teach her daughter how to make pretty dresses, which I'm happy to do. So far it's been a fun and fulfilling experience being in this new neighbourhood.

There is a common tradition in my country, where our min or mother-in-law stays and takes care of the new mum and baby for a couple of months after birth before returning to their home. My neighbour's mum-in-law would be returning this week, so my neighbour had me sew a new pretty bubu dress for her as a gift of appreciation for all her help during her stay.

Since she is an elderly woman, her dress has to be very free and comfortable, hence the bubu dress.

Materials Used

  • Kampala fabric
  • plain crepe fabric

Cutting and Sewing process

  • The first thing I did was draft and cut out the front and back dress pattern, while the front has a V-neckline.

  • Next, I joined them by the shoulder area.

  • Then I measured around the neckline and cut out about 4 inches in width of the brown plain crepe fabric, which I sewed around the measured neckline.

  • Continuing, I also sewed this trapezium shape to the front of the dress and added fringe to its hem.

  • I also used the plain fabric to elongate the sleeve length.

  • Finally, I joined the front and back by the sides and also folded the hem at the base of the dress.

And that completes the making process of this beautiful dress of grandma.

Another smile made on someone's face, it's good to show how grateful we are to someone with a gift, and a beautiful dress is just right gift for grandma.
