Still On Fulfilling My Promise, I designed a Stylish Kimono Shirt
Hello dear ever-creative hivers, a blessed week to you all, I hope the week is moving as expected, if not, don't worry, all will be well.
Sometimes ago, I shared a post about the promise I made to improve my younger sister's wardrobe to fit her working-class mode now, as a student, she was used to wearing the casual student outfit, never considering there would be another lifestyle after school, thankfully after her graduation, she was able to secure a job in one of the finest corporate organization, and now needs to obey strict formal dress code at least from Monday-Thursday, which is a sort of a burden for my sister as all her life she has been a jean and T-shirt kind of girl.
Knowing she has an elder sister who can sew and considering how expensive clothing and other general things are in our Nigerian market, I promised to help her improve her wardrobe in the little way I can, helping her make some formal outfits and even Friday wears
This week, she requested I make her a light peach-colored shirt apparently, it is one of the color codes at her office, and I was more than delighted to make not just the regular shirt but to add a form of twist to it, and with that, I came up with this kimono buttoned down three quarter sleeve shirt.
Getting a 100% cotton material at the fabric market was a bit tiring at some point, as I could not find the color range she requested, but at the point of giving up after touring several stores, I finally found this material and breathed a sigh of relief.
Making Process
- I started by cutting the front and back shirt pattern, the front has two pieces while the back was cut on fold, so it's just one piece, but I made the cut-together sleeve stop above the elbow length, and folded the middle front that would hold the buttons and button holes
- Next, I joined the shoulder area, then measured around the neck, which I used to draft the collar patterns.
- Here I already drafted and cut out the two-in-one shirt collar, then turned and joined them.
- I sewed the collar around the shirt neckline
- To elongate the sleeve, I added an extra fabric piece which I gathered its end attached cuffs to for that extra shirt details.
And here is the final look, waiting for power to be restored so I can give it a good press, then package and send it to my sister, I'm sure she would be so pleased with the final result. The more amazing benefit is that she can still wear this shirt on her jeans as a casual outfit, as it fits both perfectly, be it a formal office day or a casual day with friends and that is what I love most about this shirt, it's versatility.
