Passing On The Art Of Dressmaking, The dress That Changed Everything

Hello Hive!

It's been a hectic week for me, but all for a good cause. I've always shared about making beautiful dresses for those around me as a way of giving back to my society, but my meeting with a curious and intelligent teenager changed all of that and made me realize that I have so much more to give than just beautiful dresses.

There was an event that had me making different dresses for 7 ladies within a short while, including that of the teenager, she came around often during the making process, and would always want to help out with one thing, then she asked if I could teach her how to make beautiful dresses as well so it doesn't have to be only me, I thought about it deeply and was touched that she saw my stress, got interested in the making process even though she didn't understand most of what I was doing, and now wants me to impact her with the knowledge and skill, I was more than happy to teach her, so we got conscent from her parent and they were likewise pleased I influenced their daughter to think about learning a skill.

This experience reminds me of a popular adage in my country which say Teach me how to fish, don't just give me fish to eat because passing this skill to someone else makes it even easier to reach out to a larger number of people, and it is a lifelong skill that she can even monetize when she perfects it. The journey to learning already started, it's been three days so far and the enthusiasm from her is encouraging.

So, I will be sharing the making process of the dress I made for her that inspired this journey.

Materials used

  • Ankara fabric
  • lace fabric
  • Lining Fabric

Cutting And Sewing process

  • I started by drafting the upper part of the dress, combining both the lace fabric as the yoke and the ankara fabric as the main bodice for both front and back

  • I cut out keyholes(that's what its called) on both sides of the front lace yoke and turned it using buas strips

  • Next, I joined the pattern pieces together

  • And went ahead to draft the sleeves which is a basic three quarter sleeve.

  • I joined both the front and back upper parts together, and also joined the sleeves around both arm holes

  • The base of the dress was achieves by multiplying the waist by 2.5 which I used in determining the width I would be gathering, and also completed the length of the dress.

And here is the final look, beautiful, isn't it?

I look forward to sharing her progress on future posts and even get her onboarded on hive, I'm as excited as her, this is the first to many more lives I hope to pass on my sewing and designing skills too.

I love to see enthusiastic teenagers.

Btw this teenager has a stature bigger than mine, I will have to adjust this dress to a smaller size before it'll fit me 😁😁

Lol, I guess it's the gather effect at the waistline, and my mature mannequin , she is smaller than a size 8.

Thank you so much.

That is one curious teenager. Her parents would definitely be proud of her for thinking in that direction. Now she didn't just get a beautiful dress sown but is also grabbing the knowledge of dressmaking little by little.
