Mother's Day Gift to Myself: A Chic Shift Dress

Today happens to be one of those days I woke up feeling, might be because of the gloomy weather, or probably due to the disappointment I received from someone I didn't expect, or maybe my hormones are just playing with me, I'm not sure, all of which deprived me of the energy to want to get out of bed, but being a mum, I don't have such luxury, whether I'm in a good mood or not, I've got to get up and take care of the children.

I guess this is one of the reasons we are tagged as superhumans because no matter what, we always find the strength to carry on, sacrificing ourselves to please others unapologetically, and somehow, getting myself busy, taking care of the home and tending to my children, they are like the medicine I need to feel better and get on with other activities for the day. To make myself feel even better, I decided to work on a shift dress I had put on pending for a while, not finding the right time and mood to make them, today just felt like the right day to make myself my own special mother's day present, even though it was celebrated last Sunday all over the world, it's not too late make myself feel good.

I particularly love this dress because of the comfort and elegance it exudes, and also because it is a very easy-to-make dress without needing too much.

Materials Used

  • Ankara fabric
  • plain black crepe fabric
  • fringe

Cutting And Sewing Process

IMG_20250329_135942_527.jpg

  • I folded my fabric which was about 2 and a quarter yards into four folds, first by half and next by the sides, then I cut out the neckline of the back first and also cut out the sleeve area

  • Next, I opened it up since there wasn't a joining at the shoulder area, I trimmed out the front to the base of the dress, which measures about 3 inches.

  • To close back the front area that was trimmed out, I cut out this crepe fabric which measures the same 3 inches on fold and 6 inches when opened. And sewed it around the neckline to both hemlines

  • I also cut out two pocket pieces which I sewed on both front sides of the dress.
  • Continuing, I extended the sleeves with the same crepe fabric.

  • Finally, I finished the hem with this fancy fringed that falls gracefully like raindrops. And that completes the making process of this dress.

See how beautiful it turned out, my day that started not so good, now feels better, and I would be rocking this dress to church next Sunday.

Sometimes, we don't need to give in to down feelings, all we need to do is take that bold move, get up, and get busy, and then we will see that we are more than what might have wanted to weigh us down.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post and can now recreate your own bubu chic dress with the steps provided.

Wow! You are good at sewing such lovely outfits. It's been a while since I stopped using the sewing machine since my Mom sold it due to my brother's sickness, and we needed an ample amount of money for his treatment. I just see using my bare hands with simple stitches. Yet still love sewing.

Back to your creation, it's a beautiful thing that Moms like us know how to sew simple getups, and it's always a joy when you make one for yourself. Thanks for sharing, dear.🌷
