Make a colourful Aso-oke baggy trousers with me for the kiddies
Happy New Year, dear Hive family, wishing you all an amazing 2026, with all our dreams and goals becoming a reality. This will be my very first post for the year, and it's only appropriate that I send these New Year wishes.

Rounding up last year was pretty hectic for me. I just hope the stress eases up this new year, giving me enough time for rest, and also have some time for the things I enjoy doing, like being here on Hive as often as possible.

In my last needleworkmonday post, I shared with you the Christmas two-piece outfit I made for my daughter, nephew, and niece, a plain coloured Kimono blouse paired with colourful and vibrant baggy trousers made out of Aso-oke fabric. A long-lasting traditional fabric, common to the Yoruba people of my country.

I would have loved to start my 2026 post with a throwback of 2025 needlework posts, but I decided to fulfil my promise of sharing the making process of the baggy trousers with side pockets

The Aso-oke fabric is usually sold in a pack of 8 rows and comes in different colours and patterns. Before cutting out the pattern of the trousers,

I had to join the rows together at their edges, then proceeded to cut out the front pattern first. I made sure to add enough ease allowance, since it's not a fitted pant.

Using the front pattern, I extended it to cut out the back pattern, as this is where I add the seam allowance.

Then I joined the front pattern together by the crotch area, and also did the same to the back patterns

- Continuing, I cut out the side pocket patterns, folded all sides, and sewed them to the trouser sides just around the knee length

- I also sewed the in seam area and hemmed the trouser base

- Finally, I joined the waistband around the waist area and also passed an elastic band to help firm up the waist area.

And that completes the making process of the Aso-oke baggy trousers
I hope this tutorial helps, in case you want to recreate yours.
