Living in the Dark: The Struggles of Prolonged Power Outages in Nigeria
This prompt just had to be when I'm currently going through the worst power outage, it's been weeks, almost a month now and the electricity distribution company has still not given us a valid reason why we have to go through this frustrating experience. It is no news now that most activities we are involved in these days require the use of electricity, home activities such as washing, keeping the children entertained, making the house feel cool and fresh, even cooking, etc all require the use of electricity, what about our businesses, most business run on loss these days and most people have been frustrated to the point of giving up due to this power outage issue.its so sad.
I remember when a close friend of mine traveled out of Nigeria for the first time to further her studies in the UK, she couldn't get used to the fact that the electricity supply could be stable without any outage, we joked about how she still couldn't stop carrying her charger everywhere and always plugging her phone to charge even when it was fully charged, this is how the power outage issue in my country has affected the mental health of its citizen, and it took time before she blended in the new country, the fear of power outage and staying out of your device due to low battery is no longer a worry to her, she can use that energy to concentrate on better things.
To make matters worst now, the price of fuel has tripled, and running a generator is even more expensive, but most of us have no choice but to run this expensive expense, since our earning is also online, as a blogger on Hive for instance, imagine not having access to your devices due to low battery and all your devices shutting down, that has been my predicament for days, to make it worst, my generator became faulty, I took it to an engineer to get it fixed, after making that annoying unexpected expenses, and waiting for the generator to be back on to good use again, the engineer makes it worst, and started demanding for more money to take it to someone else who according to him is boss and more knowledgeable than him in gen. repairs, you can imagine how frustrating it has been for me, after making a former payment, in my frustration and haste to make a withdrawal to get it fixed, I made a wrong transaction, sending HBD to binance instead of hive, to show how mentally stressing the power outage issue can be on us, the more annoying part is that the NEPA officials still bring outrageous bills at the end of the month when we can't boast of 7 days light for the whole month,
I'm yet to get my generator fixed, still waiting for the supposed boss of repairs to get it fixed, and now left to rely on a neighbor's generator, so I can be active on Hive and run my business online as well, this is not very convenient tor me at all, I like my privacy and hate disturbing people as well, now I have no choice than to stick to my neighbour's timing which is not always in tune with mine, I buy the fuel for him to help me run his gen for few hours, so I can get all my devices charged to manage till the evening when he arrives from work, I feel very uncomfortable about this, but have no other choice and when he doesn't come back from work, I'm left with no choice than to stay offline.
So annoying, I just hope someday Nigeria will become a country where stable electricity will be our daily testimony, can this era ever come? Till then, we have to choice than to survive even when it isn't convenient.

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoThis Nigeria situation is so mind aching, it's a putty that you have to go through this kind of experience for this long.
The best thing is to go for another means of power supply like solar at least it will help to calm the pressure.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks, I will put the solar Inverter into consideration, the stress of relying on geñ and Nepa is just too much
Ok dear, there is the one of less that 70k that can serve well. Contact me if you need my assistance on this
Oh dear, this is really sad.
So sorry about the wrong HBD transaction, power outage can be mentally draining and I know exactly how you feel. Getting a power bank has saved me of a lot of stress.
Thanks Monica, I also got a power bank, but it still needs to be charged with electricity, still the same circle, but it has been helpful no doubt.
That's true though
That is very frustrating and can be so annoying going through all this because of power outage. Of cause everyone loves their privacy and funny thing is that your neighbor might as well not feel so comfortable having you come into her space every time to get your device charged, just saying and not generalizing as it depends on the relationship you have with your neighbors.
Electricity has been a hot topic in the country and we keep wondering when we are ever going to have a steady power supply for both the wealthy people and less privileged ones. Because believe me some complains we make do not bother the rich .
Very frustrating, yea I get what you mean about the neighbour part, to think I"m the kind of neighbour that stays indoor all day when I'm at home, I have to force myself to socialize now, it was only good morning before o🤦♀️
That is a question that is unanswerable for now, God help us, we can't even see the light in the tunnel yet.
This your situation is even more painful if you also consider the current price of petrol coz even after fixing your generator, you will still be spending money to buy petrol. It's just frustrating that Nigeria has been battling with stable electricity for over 60 years, meanwhile countries like Benin and Ghana are enjoying constant power supply
It's so tiring, we have to overspend just to get a small bit of electricity and we call ourselves giant of Africa when neighbouring countries like Ghana are already enjoying stable electricity
Then I would also say that it has affected my mental health too, because everywhere I carry my charger to charge my mobile phone. Even I am living in city where electricity is available for 24 hours but still I carry same like your friend who moved to uk for the very first time.
Smh, you see those power holding company and their shenanigans. I feel very sorry about what you are going through with light and generator, too. I hope things get better soon.
Hello dearest dreemer. Happy Monday. It is the start of another work day. I hope you are ready to give it your all and give an enchanting smile while at it. I waltzed in from #dreemport, for I am an amazing #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.
How to live and survive in Nigeria is a subject that should be taught in our schools because it is getting frustrating, stressful and expensive by the day. I can relate with your experience of not having constant light and having to rely on a neighbor to power your devices.
It's so sad the country we live in.

It seems these days to survive in Nigeria is almost impossible, in our community we are used to One day off one day On kind of power supply it was not the best but we are happy with what we have recently everything just scattered. Sometimes it takes days before we get power supply.
The most annoying part is when there is electricity we usually make use of hot plate to reduce gas usage but due to lack of electricity we now solely depend on gas, and gas price has gotten so expensive these days.
Our generator, we just abandon it because petrol is gold these days, i just hope it gets better.
