Learn to spread joy every day, I designed a stunning shift dress as a surprise gift for my mum.
Hello dear creative hivers, hope you are all having the best of the week, if not, don't worry as all things work together for good, just don't stop believing in yourself.
There is a common perception among people that we only have to show we love and care for our loved ones and those around us only on their special days of celebration like birthdays, weddings, etc but I think that's a wrong perception because every day we've got is a blessing and as long as you can make that day special for someone, by all means, go ahead and put a smile on that person's face, it doesn't even have to be someone you know, it could be a stranger in need and you can be of help at that moment, these are the little things that make the world a better place.
This week I decided to put a smile on my mum's face with a surprise stunning shift dress I made for her, no, it's not her birthday nor any special celebration, I just felt the urge to do something special for her, simply because she deserves it.
As a designer, I often find immense joy in using my talents to make others happy the act of creating something beautiful and fitting and seeing the delight on the recipient's face is one of the most fulfilling experiences I get from my skill, it's like my own super powers and I can't stop sharing this joy to my loved ones and everyone around me. It's not about waiting for a special occasion; it's about recognizing the value of everyday moments and using my skills to spread joy, even in the most unexpected ways.
I was scrolling through Pinterest when I first conceived the idea of surprising my mom with a new dress, and was was filled with excitement seeing this exact design on a model, I knew it would fit my mum, and she would love it as well, I couldn't wait to bring my vision to life. The first thing I did was buy the fabric from our local fabric store which cost about $2 for 2 yards. The making process of the dress is quite simple and didn't take much time, I think the whole process took me about less than 3 hours.
Materials used
- Ankara fabric
- Velvet bias strip
- Zipper
- Matching coloured thread
Cutting And sewing process
I
- I started by drafting the pattern which is a Simone(cut together sleeve) free-fitted dress pattern,
- Next, I cut it out, the front has a V-neckline and two pieces while the back has a high rounded neckline and two pieces, I would be attaching a zipper to the back
- To add more design details at the front, I sewed the two pieces, then sewed the bias strip on both front sides, starting from the neckline area
- Did you notice the rhinestones, I applied them for more sparkle on the fabric
Finally, I joined both front and back by the sides and shoulders and also hemmed the dress, here is the stunning finished look.
My mum was indeed happy to receive her surprise dress gift from me, I felt fulfilled seeing that happy look on her face as she fitted her new dress.
