Kites, Friends, and Sun-kissed Memories: My Childhood Summer Fun
What better time to make the best of memories that linger on for life than during your childhood, when we were carefree with no worries or burdens of daily expenses, but rather we were filled with curiosity and mischievous most times, well, that's how we got to learn about the world we live in and life in general. I recently attended my high school reunion where a major part of the event was spent reminiscing about our childhood days, it was one of those moments you practically enjoy and forget about your worries as we all had a good laugh, especially over the silly things we did as a child and how naive yet adorable we were.
Summer break is mostly termed as dry season here in my country as this is the period we experience the highest heat as the weather is usually hot and windy, with no rain, I think which is why children particularly love the season as we are not always forced to remain indoors by our parent in order not to catch cold and fall sick, but during the dry season, we are free specially during the early hours of the evening, we would gather ourselves to play in groups, there was so many games to chose from, my favourites of them was flying the kites, the older children would show us how to make them, and those who still didn't get the grasp of it would end up feeling sad and cry till one is made for them, I remember crying a few times too until I wass able to make one myself, my mum was a seamstress so I would always get thread supplies from her sewing room for everyone which sometimes puts me in trouble when she has a need for them and start searching, especially when it is a scarce coloured thread, but that didn't stop me from going back again lol, I was more focused on having fun with my friends.
There is this unexplainable feeling you get when you fly a kite, at first you doubt your capabilities even though you've seen others fly theirs, trying to hurl it into the wind can be very tasking for a first timer, either our parent, usually our dads or the older kids would help us with that and when the wind finally picks It up, our joy knew no bound as we get handed the string and told to run to maintain its balance, then excitement rush comes washing over me, see myself having an object I made flowing freely in the air, we even made a competition out of it, to see whose kite is farther up in the sky than the other, I didn't mind the competition as I was always satisfied with just seeing my kite still within my grasp free flowing as I've watched as those who compete with each other end up losing grasp of their strings in a bid to be the winner, lol not me, I always held on to my strings tightly till I have had enough.
Reflecting on this memory makes me realize how much I miss the childhood fun, we were what people call the analog children as our definition of fun was physically meeting with your friend, playing with the sand, being one with nature, and not being scared to explore, unlike children of this age, the digital children, where the parents would rather buy them smartphones, game consoles and other gadgets to keep them indoor, sadly, they end up not having the raw and natural fun we had as kids, making real friends and not just online friends, being outspoken and not shy to face a fellow human, being mischievous and corrected when you do something wrong rather than not trying to know what is wrong or not.
I think this is part of the reason why we have lots of the present generation growing up and referring to themselves as introverts, the reason why i'm conscious as a parent not to get carried away by technology and make my children miss out on what real fun is, during summer, I let them play outdoor with their friends, I even bought them a bicycle, though we haven't tried flying the kites, this prompt just reminds me of what I need to let them do next, and I sure will blog about it, children should be allowed to be children, let them have those fun, and when they are older, they would look back and smile reminiscing about their childhood memories, we shouldn't let the invention of technology take that from us, let them explore both worlds.
