I designed My Stunning Last Sunday Dress
A blessed new week to you all as we kickstart the new week with positivity, giving our best to all plans set for the week.
Yesterday was a youth fellowship in my local church and we were given a white theme, Would it be surprising to know that I didn't have a white dress that fit the occasion, it was to me as well, all through the week I was very busy that I didn't bother checking for a white dress, forgetting I had given the dress I had in mind to my younger sister only for me to get stuck at die minute making my Sunday dress.
It was on Saturday evening when I discovered I was no longer the owner of the dress I had in mind, so I had no choice but to make a dress that fit the theme. Thankfully, I had a white duchess fabric at home which I got during one of my fabric shopping spree, not knowing what to make of it then, and now it's saving the day for me.
I thought of what to make and decided to make a cowl neck dress with a draped base, this is a risky style to choose when I have little time to make a dress, but when I have my mind set on something, I make sure to give it my best and see it to the end.
Materials Used
- Duchess Fabric
- White thread
- Zipper
- Pattern paper
- Celo tape
And of course my sewing machine
Cutting And Sewing Process
- I started by drafting the base of the dress on a pattern paper, using a straight skirt pattern, for both front and back, and joined them by the sides using Celo tape.
- I also cut out a front slit and slashed the pattern to different pieces before spreading it on my fabric, this process of making clothes is called a slash and spread method.
- This is what my skirt pattern looks like now,
- next, I made pleats on both sides to bring it back to my basic skirt size, but with a draped effect.
- To make the upper part of my dress, I also made use of a basic bodice pattern
*The cowl effect was made by cutting along the chest area and spreading it before transferring it to the fabric.
- Trust me to add extra details to the back view, making a keyhole effect on the back.
It was dark by the time I finished, and I was very happy with the result, I wore my dress feeling confident and proud of myself as I did my presentation, perk of being a designer is that I can make my dress anyway any time, and also customize it to my satisfaction.
I received lots of compliments about my look, only if they knew it was a last-minute decision. Thankfully, it turned out unique and beautiful

Thank youu dear
Wow, nicely done. Dart manipulation isn't an easy task but you did it and did it very well.
Great job!!
Practice just makes it easy.
Thank you so much sis.
My sister don't even tell me when they pick some of my clothes I only discover that they are missing when I see any of them wearing it 😀.
All these sister and picking on our clothes ehn, it's something else.
The dress is giving especially the open back.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful and creative piece
Its same as my case, they would always be like, you are the designer and can always remake a new dress, I guess they see me as a boutique, worst or best part is that all have same size.
Thank you so much sis❤
Hello Glorydee. What a beautiful design, for an impromptu one you came out very beautiful. And good thing you had that fabric because it was very suitable for this design. And then they say it's bad to have a lot of fabric just in case 😅.
Thank you Lauramica❤
I know right, who says a fabric shopping spree is bad😅 it helps in the time of need.
You used quite a number of sewing techniques here - slash and spread, draping and all. Abeg take your flowers.
Thank you sis❤
Wow, what I am looking at is how you cut out the front neck, I love the dress, you did nice, well-done dear.
Everything looks so perfect on the dress, the draping, slash and spread and even the open back design, you did a beautiful job with the dress. Thanks for sharing.
