Facing Some Sewing Fears, I designed a Beautiful Dress for My Cousin

Greetings dear Hivers and creative needleworkers, I hope you are all rounding up the week's work for a fun and relaxing weekend. This week, I set my mind to round up most of the projects I had pending for a while as I had to pause and sort out some personal issues, thankfully, I'm getting them sorted bit by bit, giving me a more relaxed mind and atmosphere to get back to what I love doing, sewing.

This week, I fulfilled making the dress I had promised my cousin, at first she was not sure of the style she wanted, she just had the fabric, but after she saw the dress I made for a friend, she liked it and requested for same style as well.
To be frank, I was not excited to make the same style because the previous one I made stressed me a bit too much, having to reap and resew it again before finally getting it right, I was worried I would face the same issues, but as they say, practice makes perfect, I guess I learned from my mistakes the previous time, which made the one easy to make with no error that needed ripping the stitches again.

With that all my fears and worries about remaking the style resolved, sometimes, it's okay to face our fears, because that's how we overcome them. If I hadn't faced it by remaking the seemingly difficult style, mostly around the neckline, I still would have been carrying that fear, but now, I feel more confident and have nothing stopping me from giving it a try over and over again.

Cutting And Sewing Process

IMG_20250311_153157_993.jpg

  • I started by cutting out the upper side of the dress for both front and back, song a bustier pattern and a built-up queen anne neckline

IMG_20250311_153315_164.jpg

  • I cut out a straight skirt pattern for the base of the dress
  • joining the upper patterns, to the lower part, front to front, and back to back.

  • To design the front with the velvet bias, I marked on the fabric with my chalk how I wanted it placed, and sewed the velvet on each marked line.

  • Next, I sewed the zipper to the back of the dress, then joined both sides

  • I drafted a basic long-sleeve pattern which I sewed around both armholes.

  • finally, to make the keyholes on both shoulders, I drew a circle to indicate where I wanted the hole, then trimmed it out with my scissors, and used a black-colored normal bias strip to pipe around the trimmed area.

.
And that completed the making process of this beautiful dress. My cousin is happy to finally get her new dress completed, she was filled with happiness she couldn't even stay still for me to get a proper shot, how everyone loves a new outfit, both young and old baffles me sometimes, I'm glad at least I could bring people so much joy in creating little things like this

It is very good that you can give yourself that time to do what you like, it is necessary and it is a respite to sort out your thoughts and make better decisions.
