Trees and forests have always been an important feature of our planet’s biosphere. Unfortunately, as we feel the effects of the environment around us day by day it is time to realize that these humble warriors need more recognition and protection.

Trees offer us so many benefits, the oxygen we breathe in is provided for us through trees and other plants, and they also help absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale, have you ever found yourself under the shade of a tree on a sunny day, be sincere, how did that make you feel? Relieving isn't it, they also serve as homes to wildlife preventing them from going into extinction, not forgetting erosion, we were taught right from primary schools that the trees also help prevent erosion, with all these benefits, I believe it's the reason why the residents of the city, for instance, my city Lagos State and its government now take planting of a tree as a serious project in the city, I was very happy to see action taken in this aspect, and not just words alone like we were used to in the past.

In Lagos State, there is an annual event called Tree-planting Day, in which government officials and individuals, schools plant trees at certain designated places in the state. Landowners are also encouraged to have at least a tree planted in their house. Local and foreign nongovernment organizations and environmental groups also conduct tree planting and information drives periodically.

However, these attempts as laudable as they are, are generally not associated with the high spirits and cultural significance which might serve as the motivation to adequately take root and popularize the tree benefits to us.

Traditional Tree Celebrations in Nigeria

There are certain trees in Nigeria, some of the trees that are seen as sacred and worshipped by the people of the country. For instance, the iroko tree is much valued among the Yoruba people. Also referred to as the ‘king of the forest,’ it has been widely believed that the iroko tree has some sort of magical powers, which are the main reason why it is used in many ceremonies.

People in some parts of eastern Nigeria have placed the kola nut tree in a cultural calendar. Kola nut is used for breaking and praying for the people, mostly during gatherings such as wedding celebration ceremonies and for welcoming a guest to a new place. Often, the tree itself is revered and they are special methods used in its cutting and to tap it for continued productivity.

Another is the baobab tree from Northern Nigeria known for its multi purpose and having great age. The tree has fruit, leaves, and barks with medical values, in some places, its taproot is used to store water during the dry seasons due to it hollow trunk. It is common, especially for important community meetings to occur under this tree, reinforcing the idea of it being informant to generations of human experiences.

Though these are cultural way of celebrating trees but they are not so popular as a country since most of these traditions are specific to certain regions of the country, I believe its the reason Nigeria still battles with deforestation, desertification and so on, there is the need for more extensive celebration of trees in our country making this vital information pass to our generation to come.

Over the recent past there has been an increased effort towards introducing awareness on the significance of trees in the country. Perhaps one of the most recognizable environmentally themed national days is the National Tree Planting Day that is celebrated annually on 15th of June. A day set aside to remind us about the need to plant trees and protect the environment.

As a Nigerian, and someone who appreciates the enormous contribution, trees have made into the lives of people, and the environment, I want to see a more colorful celebration of trees in my country, and I hope this comes true soon.
