Depression and the Importance of Family Support | #LPUD

Depression is one of the silent killing emotions in this age and time, the worst part is that it can stare at us right in our face, yet we wouldn't know what we are staring at because those who suffer from depression know how to wear a fake smile, dress their best or probably use other emotions to mask this dark emotion they feel.

It was around 1 am this morning when I heard the shout of my neighbour's wife, her husband was on the verge of committing suicide if not for her timely intervention, he had bought a popular brand of pesticide common in my country, I wouldn't like to say its name for disclaimer reason, and was halfway gulping its contents when she raised an alarm which drove our other neighbours to the scene, thank God he survived after knowledgeable individuals rushed to action in providing first aid that could help him throw up the content he had already swallowed before being rushed to the hospital where he is still currently receiving treatment.

We were so surprised considering his status in town, he is a known businessman and also the landlord of my current residence, at least considered to have average wealth to take care of his home but things take on a different look on the inside because according to his wife, he has not been able to take care of them for some couple of months now and she chose to conclude that he was having an affair so she made their home a living hell for them, ignorant of the fact that her husband had gotten a bank loan that he was finding difficulty in paying back because the business he had invested into met it loses rather than profit that he was so ashamed to let his wife know, so he choose to act like a tough man, I guess this is what he has been told all his life that men are not supposed to display any sign of weakness, he kept his problems bottled up within himself that it ate him up gradually to full-blown depression to the point of wanting to take his own life.

Then I begin to wonder what is the essence of having family and close friends if we can't open up to them in our low moment, no one whether a man or woman is above feeling vulnerable, and showing your vulnerability doesn't make you weak, rather it liberates you from such feeling because you are willing to accept that what has happened is done already and ready to look for the next solution, but acting all tough on the outside doesn't make you tough because, at the end of the day, you can't lie to yourself even if you act well in front of others, when you need help, seek it, even the holy bible says heaven help those who help themselves, no matter how hard your challenge looks, you won't be the first, neither will you be the last to face it, but know this, when there is life, there is hope, Suicide is never an option to seek no matter the circumstances.

We as a family should also learn to check up on our loved ones, especially during this current hard economic crisis we face in my country, it's not enough to just assume someone is fine because they said so over the phone, do not let technology take the place of physical meeting at all times, visit and be sure they are really fine, put a smile on someone face, and another important one, *"If you can't add to someone's joy, don't add to their pain" think about that carefully. The wife learned that the power of the mouth is indeed strong especially in a state of anger, because according to her she spoke negatively to him telling him he was better dead because he couldn't meet his responsibilities at that moment which she now painfully regret.

When a family member suddenly changes his mood, especially when they start keeping to themselves, become closer to them and find ways to get them to talk to you, being harsh won't work, trust me, they need your support, love, and care to fight whatever they are going through at that moment, help them out of depression not deeper into it, after all, that is what family are for.

Depression is a very bad state no one should pray to be in, I've been there and know how terrifying it can be.

Glad you guys and his wife were able to stop in on time before it let it lead to the end of us life by committing suicide.

The thing about depression is that it takes grace of the lord to overcome it. Most times when an individual feels depressed, having a lot of people that cherish him/her reduces the effect but in the case of your landlord despite him going through depression his wife still decide to make his home hell for him, it is really tragic knowing how insensitive she was towards her husband.
