Applying the Rules of Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle at Home and in My Community
It's another interesting topic for today's Mayinleo chosen topic that I couldn't just skip because practicing the three R's Reuse, Recycle and Reduce has been a part of my life right from childhood, which I would say is linked to my mother's home management practice, I'm not sure she knew they were set of rules for the, she just instinctively practiced these minimalistic lifestyle and also made sure to instill this same practices in us her children, little did we know that these practices has its positive impacts in our planet.
We've seen from our experiences and also watch news of how the world as it evolved gets faced with the challenges of environmental degradation, climate change, and waste management, do you know that applying the principles of Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle In our daily lives should be intentional and taken seriously if you care for the planet that houses you and your loved ones
These three Rs, if adopted by most of us would help greatly in minimizing the impact of waste pollution and other factors that contribute to making our planet inhabitable and unfavourable to our health and living. Without further ado, I will be sharing with us how we can abide by these three Rs that would effectively help make our world a better place not only for us but also for our future generations.
Reduce
The first R, Reduce, as the word translates literally, is all about minimizing the way we consume things that lead to more waste, for instance, if you are one that buys a particular grocery frequently. Or let's use a detergent as an example, instead of buying multiple smaller packs, it is more advisable to buy one bigger pack, this way the waste of having let's say a dozen sachet of detergent is reduced to just one big pack, be intentional about opting for products with minimal packaging, or biodegradable packaging. There is one takeaway pack often used in Nigerian parties people use just once and throw away, do you know how disastrous that foamy like plates are to our health, not only that, I also learned recently that it doesn't decompose, if you have a party to plan, and you have to use a pack, it is better to go for the reusable plates and not the one time use takeaway plate, you've not only reduce waste, you are re-using, which leads us to the next R.
Re-use
Let's talk about fashion, do you know that one of the trendy fashions now is recycle fashion and only a few designers know about this new concept, some people think thrift wear is only meant for the poor but this narrative is gradually taking a new turn, I watched a fashion show recently which also inspired me, it's titled "The Next on Fashion" as a part of the competition, thrift wears were brought for these designers to transform to new stylish clothing, instead of throwing away those big shirt you no longer like or wear, you could convert it to a chic dress for yourself or child, go on youtube and you would find lots of this tutorial.
Consider buying second-hand items instead of new ones sometimes, it's not always a poor man thinking, look at the toys above for instance, which children wouldn't be happy to have these collections, guess what, they are all old toys. Re-use, encourages us to find new uses for items we might otherwise throw away or better still, donate or repurpose old items, if you can't someone definitely will find a new use for them rather than litter them as waste.
Recycle
The third R, Recycle, means turning or changing waste into something new, fresh, and usable. I do see some children picking plastic bottles, cartons, and drink cans in my neighborhood, according to them, selling them off to some companies earns them some amount of money depending on how much they picked. When I discovered this, I no longer threw away my bottled drinks, whether canned or plastic, I have a designated bin set for these types of waste and whenever those children pass by, they come to pick them up, feeling happy that I've helped in increasing their daily count which means more earning for them, the community is kept clean and they are recycled into something else. I'm sure your community should have these programs if you take your time to search them out, you might even earn yourself giving out recyclable materials to the companies that recycle them rather than litter our surroundings with them.
Applying the 3Rs in the Community
While individually, we can take action to continue obeying the three Rs rules, it is important to also get our community involved, by educating those who are ignorant about their unhealthy waste littering habit, and explaining to them the repercussions, we could also
Organize community clean-ups, and Join them to clean up our environment, while we collect and separate waste that is reusable, or can be recycled, giving them ideas on how to go about it. Some can even become entrepreneurs themselves just by recycling things
