A Government of the People? Nigeria's Struggle with Democracy

(Edited)

Living in a country that has experienced both sides of government, the military regime, and the democratic system of government. Though I wasn't fully aware of the military regime, as I was still probably a baby, the experience of people who did, and the story told about that period, wasn't pleasing to hear. The reason the citizens of the country shifted to a democratic one, with the hope for a better future and the economy of the nation.

We are living the future now, but as we are currently under the rule of the democratic system, but still living far from the future our fathers envisaged. Right from a young age, we were taught about the democratic system of government, being the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, which isn't a bad definition, only if indeed we had rulers that held this definition to heart.

The leaders who are elected into positions to serve the people, rather than aiming for that seat for their personal interest, looting money that would serve their unborn generation, and leaving the masses to suffer in poverty.

How come, when we have a country blessed with diverse natural resources, yet the high percentage of the population keeps wallowing in poverty, while the rich get richer, ignoring the masses they were supposed to serve?

After the last election, I vowed never to stress myself taking part in any further elections, because without any doubt, it is evident that voting and other election processes are a mere scam in this country. During the last election, you could see how fed up Nigeriand were and ready to make a change by exercising their right to vote for a presumably better leader, still, the election was rigged, making all our effort fruitless, and everyon losing hope in a better future, as this just shows that we are tied up in a system that has been knotted tightly in curruption that unravelling is the system is not even possible because we are already in a deep mess.

What about the freedom of speech we were promised? People no longer speak up because of fear, as their safety after speaking is not guaranteed. The #EndSARS protest comes to mind; it proved the deep-seated grievances many Nigerians have about governance, police brutality, and accountability. The government's response to the protests has been a subject of controversy.

That being said, there is no better governance than the current one, which is supposed to make the system better, but not having the right leaders and a system deep-rooted in corruption has made democracy seem like a joke, unless true leaders with the right mindset are allowed to take up the right positions in this country.

One thing is sure: we Nigerians want a system that truly serves our needs and provides opportunities for all, and not only some selected few. And this can be achieved by the government being more accountable, transparent, and true leaders who prioritize the public good.

Democracy as a form of government in Nigeria is not a bad idea, the problem is that the country is divided across many lines.
Due to this, religious affiliation and ethnic bigotry continues to undermine whatever stride democracy attempts to make.
Allowing each state to fully manage itself and report to a central government like we once had could yield better result.
