A Cost-Effective Journey to a Beautiful Wine-themed Ball gown made from a headscarf

Hello, creative needleworkers!

It feels exciting to connect with you once again, and I extend my heartfelt wishes for a healthy and fulfilling week ahead.

At times, we embark on quests seeking fulfillment far and wide, not realizing that what we seek might be right beside us. Some seek external love from others, without finding love and peace within themselves, how is that even supposed to work, you can't receive what you don't give. While I'm not delving into emotions extensively, it's worth noting that our feelings constantly weave into everything we do, including our needlework, breathing life into our creations.

The festive season is around the corner, especially for those looking forward to Christmas, as the year comes to an end, various events like carol services and end-of-the-year parties take place in churches, schools, and workplaces. These occasions often have specific color themes that match the Christmas color, sometimes they are asked to wear green, red, or wine. In my daughter's school, the chosen theme color is wine. Contemplating what to create for this festive event, I envisioned a beautiful ball gown. However, recent visits to the market revealed not only the challenges of obtaining materials due to their high cost but also the financial constraints imposed by the current situation in the country. Everyone is forced to adopt a minimal lifestyle, especially in spending, practicing this minimal way of living with our finances helps us avert financial crises, debts, and all. Particularly after settling various bills like rent, school fees, and utilities recently. While the desired wine lace fabric seemed financially out of reach, my determination as a fashion designer won't let me give up, I still have to find a cost-effective solution for my daughter's dress for her school's carol service.

In my quest for wine-colored fabrics, I discovered my wardrobe lacked wine-colored dresses, as I had generously shared most of the dresses recently with my cousins who came visiting, preferring that they make better use of the dresses than I do since I work at home and hardly go out except the market and church on Sunday, these dresses often sat idle in my wardrobe. Almost giving up on my search since I couldn't find any wine dress to upcycle into a dress for my daughter, luckily, I stumbled upon a forgotten treasure, a wine lace scarf, although the dress had found a new owner, the scarf remained in my possession, I must have missed it when I gave the dress out, presenting me with a delightful opportunity to design a beautiful dress without much cost. Acquiring the remaining materials wasn't a difficult task as they were more affordable and some others I had at home already.

Materials used are

  • Lace fabric
  • Tulle
  • Satin fabric
  • Zipper
  • Thread

Cutting and sewing Process

IMG_20231118_152750_452.jpg

  • I started by cutting the front and back pattern, combining the tulle and lace fabric, using the satin as lining

IMG_20231118_162525_008.jpg

  • Next I joined them also turning them with the lining fabric for a cleaner finish

  • To make the base of the dress, using her waist measurement as the radius, I cut out a flare

  • Continuing, I cut a long strip of the tulle, the length is gotten after deducting her half-length, the long strip is then gathered on the flare before attaching it to the upper side of the dress.

  • Finally, I trimmed out the flowery pattern of the lace, and tacked it on the tiny strip I made as an off-shoulder sleeve, also attaching a zipper to the back of the dress, and here is the final look😍

Why is it difficult to take 2-year-old pictures, I had to make a lot of promises and petting before I got these ones.😅

Oh my, @glorydee - these photos (and the dress) are simply divine... What a glorious project - I love that you recycled materials: yes; often the financial shadows and games push us in a positive direction, where we realise that we have much more than we thought we had - and we can make magic with tiny resources!

And it turned out lovely, I can feel Christmas in the air already.
It is better to manage what we have at home rather than stretch and stress ourselves financially in this season.

Hello @glorydee, what a good result you have brought us, how beautiful your motivation is to want to make a dress for your daughter and that it will turn out beautiful. Determination is a great power and I see that you have it, you insisted and insisted and a scarf appeared that, combining with other materials, allowed you to materialize your desire.

I love how you did it, thanks for sharing. I am touched by your achievement.

The outfit was spectacular and even though it may have been difficult for you to take the photos, they seem perfect to me, your girl looks beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this beauty of experience.
