Three Tune Tuesday: Cover Version

Hello, it’s Tuesday, it'stime for Three Tune Tuesday!

As always, thank you to @ablaze for one of the coolest initiatives on Hive. It’s such a simple idea, but it keeps music discovery alive and personal.

Today I’m bringing three cover versions that, for me, feel perfect for the middle of the week, especially in the middle of this chaotic world we’re all trying to navigate.

What I love most about a cover version is not when an artist plays it exactly like the original. That can be impressive, sure. But the magic happens when a musician offers a fresh interpretation, when they reshape the mood, adjust the emotional weight, and reveal something new that was always hiding inside the song.

Here are my picks.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor – Do You Remember the First Time? (Originally by Pulp)

The original version by Pulp, fronted by Jarvis Cocker, is unmistakably Pulp. If you know, you know. A little cheeky, a little melancholic, slightly awkward, very “loser-coded” in the most charming Britpop way.

But Sophie Ellis-Bextor brings a completely different energy to it. Her version feels sharper and more forceful. The frustration and emotional tension underneath the lyrics become more pronounced. There’s a polished intensity in her delivery that transforms the song from slightly detached nostalgia into something more confrontational and alive.

As a huge Pulp fan, I didn’t expect to love this version as much as I do. But I really, really do. In fact, when I watched Pulp live in Japan last year and this song came on, I caught myself hearing Sophie’s version in my head instead. That’s when you know a cover has done something special, it rewires your memory of the original.

Alanis Morissette – King of Pain (Originally by The Police)

Alanis Morissette covering The Police is already an interesting combination. The original “King of Pain,” sung by Sting, carries that restrained, slightly distant melancholy, almost observational in tone. It’s introspective, poetic, and controlled.

Alanis takes that control and stretches it emotionally.

When she performs “King of Pain,” especially in her MTV Unplugged era, the song feels more vulnerable and raw. Her voice doesn’t sit politely inside the melody, it trembles, pushes, and occasionally cracks with feeling. The metaphors in the lyrics suddenly feel less like clever writing and more like lived experience.

Where Sting sounds like someone describing sadness, Alanis sounds like someone actively going through it.

That shift alone makes it worth revisiting the song through her lens.

Tame Impala – Prototype (Originally by OutKast)

This one might surprise some people. “Prototype” by OutKast is already smooth, futuristic R&B, tender and intimate. André 3000’s delivery is soft and heartfelt.

Then Tame Impala takes it into another dimension.

Kevin Parker and company slow it down even more, drench it in dreamy psychedelia, and turn it into something that feels like it’s floating in space. The groove becomes hazier, more atmospheric. It’s less about crisp rhythm and more about texture and mood.

I’m a huge Tame Impala fan. I’ve gone to concerts wearing a Tame Impala t-shirt more times than I can count. Haha. Though if I’m being honest, my heart still belongs mostly to their first two albums, Innerspeaker and Lonerism. That raw psychedelic energy is unbeatable.

Their version of “Prototype” captures that early spirit perfectly: warm, nostalgic, slightly distant, but deeply emotional.

So there you have it, three cover songs that have been on repeat for me lately.

Sometimes a cover doesn’t replace the original. It just sits beside it, offering another doorway into the same emotional space. And on a Tuesday, that’s more than enough.

Hope you enjoy them.
