Never really finished, and that’s okay [EN/FR]

This morning, wake-up around 8:30am. I got up straight away. Honestly, I would have liked to get up earlier. But we went to bed a bit late with @altheana yesterday.

I went downstairs. I emptied the ashes from the stove. I made myself a coffee. Well no, a flat white: double espresso and frothed plant-based milk.

Then I got ready and went outside. Yesterday I sharpened my woodworking knife, so obviously, I wanted to use it. I started my fir wood kitchen whisk. I think I will make a more detailed article about it, so I won’t go too much into detail here. But working wood with a tool that you just sharpened yourself, it has something. It cuts clean.

@altheana came to say hello to me and I went back inside with her.

She got ready and we went running. It had been more than 7 days since we had run. The weather was really bad. Usually rain doesn’t stop us. Here honestly, we just didn’t feel like it.

We did almost 5 km each. Perfect to wake up the body.

When we got back, we started cutting a hedge before the sap rises again. Spring is coming soon. We don’t have a hedge trimmer. Just two small pruning shears. So it takes time. We cut branch after branch. It’s slow. But in the end it’s quite satisfying.

There are a few big branches left, but there we will need a saw. The pruning shears won’t do the job. We were hungry so we took a shower and cooked food. Also, I wanted afterward to go get vegetables from a permaculture garden that I had spotted on Google Maps, not very far from the house.

While eating, I searched again for the garden. It no longer exists. The people stopped their activity. It’s a shame. For months I had been telling myself that I would go. They were only open on Fridays. I wanted to take advantage of the vacation and the fact that it is Friday to go there.

I don’t know why they stopped. I imagine that facing the surrounding supermarkets that sell processed products or products filled with pesticides at lower prices, it is difficult to keep going. I may be wrong. But often, that’s the problem. Local and clean require an effort that not everyone is ready to make. Us first.

So instead, I told myself that I would move forward with the drywall tape joints upstairs. Might as well make the room progress. I changed clothes. I started a YouTube tutorial to give myself a bit of courage. And I tried.

My first tape was average. And I felt very quickly that I didn’t have the patience to make 10 others.

@altheana came upstairs a few minutes later. She tried. Was calmer, more patient. I let her do the tape joints while I was applying finishing compound on as many small holes as possible. Like that, each one their role.

After two good hours, we had had enough. I went back outside to continue my wooden whisk. The handle is almost ready. And that, that feels good.

When coming back inside, we moved forward a bit more on the drywall tape joints. There will be one left for tomorrow. Impossible to do it today because the panels were damaged and we first had to apply compound and wait.

We would need two or three more weeks of vacation to do everything. And what is funny is that the more we move forward, the more we find new ideas. One improvement leads to another. You finish a wall, you see the ceiling differently. You trim a hedge, you imagine redoing the whole garden.

We will never really be finished. And somewhere, maybe that’s what is good.

Ce matin, réveil vers 8h30. Je me suis levé direct. En vrai, j’aurais aimé me lever plus tôt. Mais on s’est couchés un peu tard avec @altheana hier.

Je suis descendu. J'ai vidé les cendres du poêle. Je me suis fait un café. Enfin non, un flat white : double espresso et lait végétal fouetté.

Ensuite je me suis préparé et je suis allé dehors. Hier j’ai affûté mon couteau de woodworking, donc forcément, j’avais envie de l’utiliser. J’ai commencé mon fouet de cuisine en sapin. Je pense que j’en ferai un article plus détaillé, donc je ne rentre pas trop dans les détails ici. Mais travailler le bois avec un outil que tu viens d’aiguiser toi-même, ça a un truc. Ça coupe net.

@altheana est venue me dire bonjour et je suis rentré avec elle.

Elle s’est préparée et on est partis courir. Ça faisait plus de 7 jours qu’on n’avait pas couru. La météo était vraiment mauvaise. D’habitude la pluie ne nous arrête pas. Là honnêtement, on n’avait juste pas envie.

On a fait presque 5 km chacun. Parfait pour réveiller le corps.

En rentrant, on a commencé à couper une haie avant que la sève ne remonte. C'est bientôt le printemps. On n’a pas de taille-haie. Juste deux petits sécateurs. Donc ça prend du temps. On coupe branche après branche. C’est lent. Mais c’est finalement assez satisfaisant.

Il reste quelques grosses branches, mais là il nous faudra une scie. Le sécateur ne fera pas le travail. On avait faim donc on a pris une douche et fait à manger. En plus, je voulais ensuite aller chercher des légumes dans un potager en permaculture que j’avais repéré sur Google Maps, pas très loin de la maison.

En mangeant, j’ai re-cherché le potager. Il n’existe plus. Les personnes ont arrêté leur activité. C'est dommage. Ça faisait des mois que je me disais que j’irais. Ils n’étaient ouverts que le vendredi. Je voulais profiter des vacances et du fait qu'on soit vendredi pour y faire un tour.

Je ne sais pas pourquoi ils ont arrêté. J’imagine que face aux supermarchés autour qui vendent des produits transformés ou remplis de pesticides à des prix plus bas, c’est difficile de tenir. Je me trompe peut-être. Mais souvent, c’est ça le problème. Le local et le propre demandent un effort que tout le monde n’est pas prêt à faire. Nous les premiers.

Du coup, à la place, je me suis dit que j’allais avancer les bandes de placo à l’étage. Autant faire progresser la pièce. Je me suis changé. J’ai lancé un tuto YouTube pour me donner un peu de courage. Et j’ai essayé.

Ma première bande était moyenne. Et j’ai senti très vite que je n’avais pas la patience pour en faire 10 autres.

@altheana est montée quelques minutes plus tard. Elle a essayé. A été plus calme, plus patiente. Je l’ai laissée faire les bandes pendant que je passais de l’enduit de lissage sur le maximum de petits trous possible. Comme ça, chacun son rôle.

Au bout de deux bonnes heures, on en avait assez. Je suis ressorti continuer mon fouet en bois. Le manche est presque prêt. Et ça, ça fait plaisir.

En rentrant, on a encore avancé un peu sur les bandes de placo. Il en restera une pour demain. Impossible de la faire aujourd’hui car les plaques étaient abîmées et il fallait d’abord poser un enduit et attendre.

Il nous faudrait encore deux ou trois semaines de vacances pour tout faire. Et ce qui est drôle, c’est que plus on avance, plus on trouve de nouvelles idées. Une amélioration en entraîne une autre. Tu termines un mur, tu vois le plafond différemment. Tu tailles une haie, tu imagines refaire tout le jardin.

On n’aura jamais vraiment fini. Et quelque part, c’est peut-être ça qui est bien.
