[Garden Journal] Mid-May Garden Update: tomatoes, peppers and a ton of weeds [EN/FR]

Hello gardeners! Mid-May is well past, the garden can finally shift into high gear. Here, despite the lack of water for two months, the grass grows enormously and invades my crops.

I think this comes from the fact that the other ten months of the year have been particularly rainy, and that the water tables are still well saturated.

In the photo above, you can see four small plots of cultivation.
In the foreground on the left: my radishes and peas.
Behind: strawberries, salads, and under the greenhouse, cherry tomatoes.

On the two plots on the right, I haven’t planted anything yet, but precisely, I need to take care of it. I have six tomato plants to put in the ground!

Before anything else, I need to weed, because I can’t use the mower here.
In the barn, I found this tool... but I couldn’t identify its name.

So I made a manual mowing attempt on the first plot on the right.
By the way, I said there was nothing on it... But if you look closely, all the way to the right, you’ll see a rhubarb plant.

To thrive, tomatoes need a lot of space.
The problem is that my garden bed doesn’t give them enough.
That said, by placing them in staggered rows, I can optimize the available space a bit.

All I had left to do was dig the holes to place the plants.
At the bottom of each hole, I placed some nettle leaves. They are rich in nitrogen, they nourish the plant gradually, promoting good vegetative development (stems, leaves, etc.).

Finally, I went back around the garden bed with my weeding tool to remove as much tall grass as possible, which I can’t cut with the mower and which shades my young plants.

I also moved the greenhouse one square to free up my cherry tomatoes.
In the greenhouse, I placed my pepper plants.
I don’t yet know where to plant them. Especially since our niece’s boyfriend will bring us five more tomato plants, from his father’s permaculture garden.

If all goes well and diseases spare us, we should have more than enough for our own consumption, and even to make jars to keep in our pantry.

Bonjour les jardiniers ! La mi-mai est largement passée, le jardin peut enfin passer à la vitesse supérieure. Ici, malgré le manque d’eau depuis deux mois, l’herbe pousse énormément et envahit mes cultures.

Je pense que cela vient du fait que les dix autres mois de l’année ont été particulièrement pluvieux, et que les nappes sont encore bien gorgées d’eau.

Sur la photo ci-dessus, vous pouvez voir quatre petites parcelles de culture.
Au premier plan à gauche : mes radis et petits pois.
Derrière : fraises, salades, et sous la serre, des tomates cerises.

Sur les deux parcelles de droite, je n’ai encore rien planté, mais justement, il faut que je m’en occupe. J’ai six plants de tomates à mettre en terre !

Avant toute chose, je dois désherber, car je ne peux pas passer la tondeuse ici.
Dans la grange, j’ai trouvé cet outil... mais je n’ai pas réussi à identifier son nom.

J’ai donc fait une tentative de fauchage manuel sur la première parcelle de droite.
D’ailleurs, je disais qu’il n’y avait rien dessus… Mais si vous regardez bien, tout à droite, vous verrez un pied de rhubarbe.

Pour bien s’épanouir, les tomates ont besoin de beaucoup d’espace.
Le problème, c’est que mon carré potager ne leur en laisse pas suffisamment.
Cela dit, en les plaçant en quinconce, je peux optimiser un peu l’espace disponible.

Il ne me restait plus qu’à creuser les trous pour y placer les plants.
Au fond de chaque trou, j’ai déposé quelques feuilles d’orties. Elles sont riches en azote, elles nourrissent la plante progressivement, favorisant un bon développement végétatif (tiges, feuilles, etc.).

Enfin, je suis repassé autour du potager avec mon outil de désherbage pour retirer au maximum l’herbe haute, que je ne peux pas tondre et qui fait de l’ombre à mes jeunes plants.

J’ai aussi décalé la serre d’un carré pour libérer mes tomates cerises.
Dans la serre, j’ai installé mes plants de piments.
Je ne sais pas encore où les planter. D’autant plus que le copain de notre nièce va nous apporter cinq autres plants de tomates, issus du potager en permaculture de son père.

Si tout se passe bien et que les maladies nous épargnent, nous devrions avoir largement de quoi couvrir notre consommation, et même en faire des bocaux à conserver dans notre garde-manger.
