Gene & Ashlees DailyJams For Seventies Sunday! Both Picking Classic 1973 Released Tunes & Records! New York Dolls & Iggy & The Stooges! 🎸+ 1977 Bonus Tune! + David Bowie Cameo!

A special bonus Seventies Sunday! With me & my girlfriend Ashlee! On this Sunday morning we bring you our DailyJams from classic early seventies New York City bands! The amount of bands these two artists influenced is endless!

IMG_9937.jpeg

Ashlee picks the New York Dolls! One of the most influential bands of all time! They only had two records so Ashlee picks one from each. On second thought let’s stick to one album each for both our tunes! Ashlee picks the song Personality Crisis for her DailyJam, that’s the opening track off the Self Titled 1973 released debut full length from the band! For BonusJam Ashlee picks the song Trash off same record! The New York Dolls didn’t just influence punk rock later this wild decade, they are practically the sole reason for glam rock and many bands who made it huge in the eighties. Unfortunately the New York Dolls as with most original things didn’t get the mainstream success of major radio play and huge success. They deserved it but as per usual the first to the party takes the hits and arrows while a heavily influenced band coming up years later capitalizes on the style and gets the first mainstream success with said style! We’ve seen it with bands like The Pixies who Nirvana basically took there sound from but again the first to the party never gets its due and huge mainstream success.

Next it’s me (Gene) and I pick Iggy & The Stooges! The Stooges first album was released in 1969 which is wild! They indeed were the founders of punk rock! I pick there third album Raw Power which was released also in 1973 matching the year Ashlee picked from. I pick the album opening track “Search And Destroy” for my DailyJam! And for BonusJam the song with same title as record “Raw Power”. Though same as the New York Dolls Iggy & The Stooges didn’t have massive mainstream success, they are widely respected and widely known for starting punk rock! A interesting note, David Bowie took an interest into Iggy personally and actually mixed these versions of the tunes! Talk about seventies legends! Bowie would later appear on Iggy’s 1977 solo album and do backing vocals on the singles! Probably best known being this 1977 classic tune ⬇️ (The Passenger) where Bowie sings the “La La La’s during chorus!

Some most most excellent proto Punk right here!

Trash, such a classic. Kind of Micky and Silvia's Love Is Strange on histrionic overdrive. This tune is definitely Hot Hot Hot!

Maybe my fave from The Dolls, but Chatterbox is right up there! Just so raw and jangly, and yet well constructed. Nice bass and drums to drive the song along, with the overdriven guitar snarling as hard as the vocals.

Eternal Rock Idol Jim "Iggy" Osterberg - what else can I say. He was a punk even in '65 when he was drumming and singing for The Iguanas, where he got the Iggy nickname from. Search and Destroy is maybe punk, but also Very Metal! That lead guitar is ear splitting, just the way I like it! Iggy manages to shine and float his vocals full of attitude over the screaming guitar.

So for anyone interested, let's hear Jim in The Iguanas from 1965. What? yaaa! When The Beatles needed Help, Pop was screaming harder than Lennon did in TwistNShout! I can identify maybe 25% of the words in this one. :D

Here is Again and Again, the first song Iggy wrote, and I think that's him on drums and vocals.

Thanks for the (proto) Punk Memories!
