Sixties Sunday! A Rare & Special Sixties Legends Sunday! 🎸 Jimmy Hendrix & Led Zeppelin Classic DailyJams With Gene & Ashlee!
A special rare Sixties Sunday! Picking two tunes each from the Sixties! A DailyJam & a BonusJam! This week we pick from legends of the late sixties. Ashlee picks Jimmy Hendrix! I (Gene) pick Led Zeppelin!
Ashlee picks the song “All Along The Watchtower” for DailyJam from the 1968 album “Electric Ladyland” and the classic tune “Hey Joe” for BonusJam from the 1967 record “Are You Experienced”.
I (Gene) pick both my tunes from Led Zeppelin’s first two albums, both released in 1969! Daily Jam I go with “Dazed and Confused” from the self titled 1969 debut record. For BonusJam I go to the next record 1969’s “Led Zeppelin II” and pick the classic tune “Whole Lotta Love”.
Taking the wayback machine way back to the start of heavy music, very cool!
This reminds me that at least 2 of these featured tunes have earlier versions.
Dazed and Confused was written by Jake Holmes in '67 and was being performed by Page when he was still with The Yardbirds in '68. You can see the song developing over time if you watch some of the Yardbirds videos on YouTube such as this one. Page is using the bow on his guitar to start the solo, and then gets more into the harder parts which mostly made their way into the Led Zep version.

Hey Joe has been around since probably the 50s in some form or another. In '65 The Leaves out of LA recorded the first version of it. They released a few other versions and I think this is later, in 66 or so. This one is in stereo and is really raw and dirty. Proto-punk? Maybe.
