Saludos hivers y bienvenidos a mi blog. En Venezuela empezó la temporada de lluvia y con ella, se multiplican las posibilidades para tener encuentros con unos de mis modelos favoritos para hacer fotos, los insectos, y también con un animal muy típico de este clima, las babosas y los caracoles.

Hello hivers and welcome to my blog. In Venezuela the rainy season began and with it, the possibilities multiply to have encounters with some of my favorite models to take photos, insects, and also with an animal very typical of this climate, slugs and snails.

Muchas veces he encontrado babosas entre las hojas de la lechuga que compro en el supermercado, esas babosas son pequeñas, entre 4-5 centímetros, pero la que me encontré hace poco era muchísimo más grande, media unos 8 cms.

Many times I have found slugs between the leaves of the lettuce that I buy in the supermarket. These slugs are small, between 4-5 centimeters, but the one I found recently was much larger, measuring about 8 cm.

Esta babosa terrestre la encontré adentro del envase que uso para alimentar a los tres gatos que viven al lado de mi edificio, ellos viven en un terreno lleno de vegetación y árboles, y como ha llovido mucho las babosas salen a alimentarse, creo que le llamó la atención el olor de las croquetas para gatos jajaja. Cuando la ví de lejos pensé que era una hoja seca 🍂 pero al acercarme me dí cuenta que era una babosa, la más grande que he visto, así que aproveché para tomarle algunas fotos, como siempre hago con todos esos pequeños y fascinantes seres vivos que tengo la suerte de encontrarme jejeje.

I found this land slug inside the pot that I use to feed the three cats that live next to my building, they live in a field full of vegetation and trees, and since it has rained a lot the slugs come out to feed, I think the smell of the cat croquettes caught his attention hahaha. When I saw it from afar I thought it was a dry leaf 🍂 but when I got closer I realized it was a slug, the biggest I've ever seen, so I took the opportunity to take some photos of it, as I always do with all those small and fascinating living beings that I'm lucky to find myself hehehe.

Las babosas y los caracoles no son insectos, sino moluscos gasterópodos, se caracterizan por segregar una especie de moco o baba que los ayuda a desplazarse, mantenerse hidratados, comunicarse y atraer pareja a través del rastro, la baba también los protege de algunos depredadores. El cuerpo de las babosas está compuesto mayormente de agua por lo que la baba las ayuda a evitar que mueran por desecación (resequedad de los órganos blandos). Son animales mayormente nocturnos.

Slugs and snails are not insects, but gastropod mollusks. They are characterized by secreting a type of mucus or slime that helps them move, stay hydrated, communicate and attract a mate along the trail. The slime also protects them from some predators. The body of slugs is made up mostly of water, so slime helps prevent them from dying from desiccation (dryness of soft organs). They are mostly nocturnal animals.

Las babosas y los caracoles son hermafroditas, variando su género de macho a hembra dependiendo del ciclo hormonal. Ponen entre 100 y 500 huevos que esconden debajo de la tierra. La mayoría de las babosas se alimenta de vegetación y residuos animales aunque también hay algunas especies carnívoras que cazan a otras babosas.

Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites, varying their gender from male to female depending on the hormonal cycle. They lay between 100 and 500 eggs that they hide underground. Most slugs feed on vegetation and animal waste, although there are also some carnivorous species that hunt other slugs.

En el extremo de las antenas superiores están ubicados los ojos, los cuales también tienen funciones olfativas y táctiles / At the end of the upper antennae are the eyes, which also have olfactory and tactile functions

Las pequeñas antenas inferiores funcionan como tentáculos sensoriales / The small lower antennae function as sensory tentacles

El cuerpo de esta babosa es diferente a las que he visto hasta ahora porque es compacto y uniforme, y el manto o escudo, no difiere del resto, tiene el mismo ancho desde la cabeza hasta la cola así que eso me llamó bastante la atención 🤔.

The body of this slug is different from the ones I have seen so far because it's compact and uniform, and the mantle or shield, doesn't differ from the rest, it has the same width from the head to the tail so that caught my attention 🤔 .

Estuve unos minutos interactuando con esta babosa y fue fácil tomarle fotos porque se movía lentamente, una de las cosas más lindas de estos animales son sus antenas, son realmente encantadoras 😊.

I spent a few minutes interacting with this slug and it was easy to take photos of it because it moved slowly, one of the cutest things about these animals are their antennae, they are really charming 😊.

Sé que a muchas personas les desagradan las babosas pero la verdad es que son muy interesantes, basta con observarlas detenidamente por unos minutos para darse cuenta que son muy simpáticas.
