Saludos hivers. Empezar el año conociendo una ruta nueva es una excelente idea para los que amamos el senderismo así que el sábado acepté la invitación de mi hermana para visitar el cerro Serranías de Las Delicias, conocido popularmente como cerro del hotel Maracay, mi hermana ya había subido este cerro hace unos años atrás y quería que yo también lo conociera, es un paseo obligatorio para cualquier persona que disfrute las actividades de montaña, y viva en el estado Aragua.

Hello hivers. Starting the year by exploring a new route is an excellent idea for those of us who love hiking, so last Saturday I accepted my sister's invitation to visit the Serranías de Las Delicias hill, popularly known as the Maracay Hotel hill, my sister had already climbed this hill a few years ago and wanted me to experience it too. It's a must-do hike for anyone who enjoys mountain activities and lives in the state of Aragua.

Para llegar, salimos temprano y tomamos un autobús hasta el terminal de Maracay, allí, caminamos hasta la parada correspondiente y esperamos uno de los autobuses que pasan justo frente al parque donde está esta montaña. Salimos a las 7 de la mañana de La Victoria y a las 8 ya estábamos entrando al parque Nacional Henri Pittier, que es donde se encuentra el cerro del hotel Maracay. Afuera había un puesto de ventas de frutas y productos alimenticios artesanales como jaleas, galletas, dulces, etc., también muchas motos estacionadas y gente haciendo ejercicios en los aparatos que están afuera de la entrada al parque.

To get there, we left early and took a bus to the Maracay terminal. From there, we walked to the bus stop and waited for one of the buses that pass right in front of the park where the mountain is located. We left La Victoria at 7:00 a.m. and by 8:00 a.m. we were already entering Henri Pittier National Park, where the Hotel Maracay hill is located. Outside, there was a stall selling fruit and artisanal food products like jams, cookies, sweets, etc. There were also many motorcycles parked and people exercising on the equipment outside the park entrance.

Llegamos a la entrada del parque y empezamos a subir, la primera parte del trayecto está pavimentada con cemento y llega hasta un área recreativa con algunos aparatos para hacer ejercicios y jugar, son unos cinco minutos de caminata, a partir de ahí el terreno va cambiando, tierra, piedras, arena y una mezcla de los tres jajaja. A la hora que empezamos a subir, las 8, mucha gente ya estaba bajando, obviamente esto tiene que ver con el intenso calor que hace en Maracay, sumado a que estamos en temporada de verano y todo está seco y árido, y no solamente por motivos del propio ciclo de la naturaleza, sino también por los incendios forestales producto de la irresponsable acción humana 😤.

We arrived at the park entrance and started climbing. The first part of the path is paved with cement and leads to a recreational area with some exercise equipment and games. It's about a five-minute walk. From there, the terrain changes: dirt, rocks, sand, and a mix of all three, hahaha. When we started the walk, at 8:00 a.m., many people were already coming down. Obviously, this is due to the intense heat in Maracay, plus the fact that it's summer and everything is dry and arid, not only because of the natural cycle but also because of the forest fires caused by irresponsible human activity 😤.

El cerro del hotel Maracay se encuentra en el parque Nacional Henri Pittier, este parque, el primero en ser declarado como parque nacional en Venezuela con el nombre de Rancho Grande en el año 1937 por el presidente Eleazar López Contreras, está ubicado al norte del país y abarca casi todo el estado Aragua, incluyendo gran parte de la cordillera de la Costa, así como también de la parte montañosa del estado Carabobo. Su extensión es de 107.800 hectáreas que ofrecen una mezcla única de playas y montañas.

The hill where the Hotel Maracay is located is within Henri Pittier National Park. This park, the first to be declared a national park in Venezuela under the name Rancho Grande in 1937 by President Eleazar López Contreras, is situated in the north of the country and encompasses almost the entire state of Aragua, including a large part of the Coastal Range, as well as the mountainous region of Carabobo state. Its 107,800 hectares offer a unique blend of beaches and mountains.

Esta montaña tiene varias paradas y cada persona llega hasta donde quiera o hasta donde su cuerpo y su mente se lo permitan jajaja. No, no se asusten, no es una montaña muy alta, ni muy difícil, la verdad es que no, sin embargo hay un factor que incide directamente en el esfuerzo, el ánimo y el tiempo que le tomará a cada quien terminar el recorrido, y es el calor y el sol inclemente que pueden acabar incluso con la mejor actitud jajaja 🌞🥵😬. El objetivo principal de casi todos los que visitan esta montaña es llegar hasta el famoso contenedor, y el nuestro también, para lograrlo hay que recorrer los 4,7 kms que nos depara el camino frente a nosotros ⛰️🏃🏻‍♀️.

This mountain has several stops, and everyone goes as far as they want or as far as their body and mind allow, hahaha. No, don't worry, it's not a very high mountain, nor very difficult, really. However, there is one factor that directly affects the effort, the mood, and the time it takes each person to finish the hike, and that's the heat and the relentless sun, which can ruin even the best attitude, hahaha 🌞🥵😬. The main goal for almost everyone who visits this mountain is to reach the famous container, and ours, too. To achieve it, we have to cover the 4.7 km that lie ahead ⛰️🏃🏻‍♀️.

Después de pasar la subida de concreto, atravesar una de las zonas más afectadas por los incendios y caminar por varios senderos curvos y estrechos mayormente planos, empezó el camino de subida, la dificultad es media y el terreno es bastante irregular, de tierra y algunas rocas, es importante caminar sin distraerse para evitar resbalar o caer al pisar un hueco o algun tramo de subida que esté muy liso. Cuando aparecía algún árbol con sombra aprovechábamos para tomar agua, algo muy importante en un día de tan intenso calor y sol.

After passing the concrete climb, crossing one of the areas most affected by the fires and walking along several mostly flat, narrow, curved paths, the uphill trail began. The difficulty is medium and the terrain is quite uneven, with dirt and some rocks. It's important to walk without getting distracted to avoid slipping or falling when stepping on a hole or a very smooth uphill section. Whenever we came across a shady tree, we took the opportunity to drink water, something very important on such an intensely hot and sunny day.

Mientras subíamos vimos a varias personas haciendo el recorrido descalzas, a esa hora el suelo aún está fresco y debe ser agradable hacerlo, sin embargo, y aunque parezca una buena idea intentar esa práctica del "grounding" que se ha vuelto muy popular, la gente suele tirar tantas cosas por ahí que hay que tener cuidado con los lugares que se elijan para caminar sin zapatos. Poco antes de llegar al tercer kilómetro del recorrido la geografía cambia por completo, aparece la arena y el suelo se vuelve blanco, al ver el fuerte resplandor que los rayos del sol proyectan sobre la misma y el contraste con el azul saturado del cielo, es fácil imaginar que estamos cerca de una playa 😃 jajaja, lo que en este caso diría que más bien es una mezcla de deseo y delirio 😂, nuestro deseo de refrescarnos y los delirios ocasionados por el exceso de sol en nuestras cabezas 🥵😂🤣.

As we climbed, we saw several people walking barefoot. At that time of day, the ground was still cool, and it must have been pleasant. However, even though it might seem like a good idea to try the "grounding" practice that has become so popular, people tend to leave so much stuff lying around that you have to be careful about where you choose to walk barefoot. Shortly before reaching the three-kilometer mark, the landscape changes completely. Sand appears, and the ground turns white. Seeing the intense glare of the sun's rays on it and the contrast with the saturated blue of the sky, it's easy to imagine we're near a beach 😃 hahaha, which in this case I'd say is more of a mixture of desire and delirium 😂, our desire to cool off and the delusions caused by the excessive sun on our heads 🥵😂🤣.

Aunque soy una persona muy alegre y de constante buen humor, hay caminatas que sacan lo peor de mí 😬🤭🙈😂, hace años un amigo le puso un nombre a ese estado alterado que a veces me ataca jajaja, "perro bravo" 😂🤣🤣, así que cada vez que empiezo a refunfuñar, a hablar sola en el camino o a poner cara de psicópata cuando me piden que sonría para la foto, lo que hacen es reírse y decir, "ya está en modo perro bravo" 🤣🤣. Hacía muchas caminatas que el perro bravo no había aparecido, pero ese día el sol soltó los demonios que estaban escondidos jajaja, igual ese efecto no me dura mucho y poco a poco se me va pasando 😁😂.

Although I'm a very happy and always in a good mood person, some hikes bring out the worst in me 😬🤭🙈😂. Years ago, a friend gave a name to that altered state that sometimes attacks me, hahaha, "fierce dog" 😂🤣🤣. So, whenever I start grumbling, talking to myself on the trail, or making a psycho face when they ask me to smile for a photo, they just laugh and say, "Here she is in fierce dog mode" 🤣🤣. It had been many hikes since the fierce dog had appeared, but that day the sun unleashed the demons that were hiding, hahaha. That effect doesn't last long though, and it gradually fades away 😁😂.

Mi hermana iba unos tres metros adelante y de repente escucho que me dice, "apúrate, mira allá", y ahí estaba finalmente, el famoso y el más esperado 🥵 jajaja, el contenedor o el container 😃, eran las 10 de la mañana, lo que significa que hicimos el recorrido en dos horas, aunque en cierto momento hayan parecido mas jajaja. Había unas cuantas personas que ya estaban ahí, algunos descansaban, otros estaban comiendo, conversando, disfrutando de las hermosas vistas o tomando fotos. En ese punto la única sombra es la que da el contenedor 😬, no hay árboles sino mas lejos, así que aproveché que aún había espacio de ese lado y me senté ahí, el perro bravo se había quedado lejos jajaja.

My sister was about three meters ahead, and suddenly I heard her say, "Hurry up, look over there!" And there it was, finally, the famous and most anticipated 🥵 hahaha, the container 😃. It was 10 a.m., which means we did the walk in two hours, although at some point it felt longer hahaha. There were a few people already there; some were resting, others were eating, chatting, enjoying the beautiful views, or taking photos. At that point, the only shade was from the container 😬; there aren't any trees there, except further away. So I took advantage of the fact that there was still space on that side and sat down there. The fierce dog had stayed far away hahaha.

El container está a 1.131 mts sobre el nivel del mar y desde ahí las vistas son espectaculares, de un lado la panorámica nos permite apreciar la capital del estado Aragua, Maracay, así como algunas partes de ciudades cercanas como Cagua y Turmero, y al fondo, el lago de Valencia, del otro lado podemos ver la naturaleza del Henri Pittier, que a pesar de la desoladora imagen que han dejado los incendios, aún hay bastantes montañas y zonas que no han sido afectadas por el fuego. No conseguí información referente al año desde el cual ese container está allá arriba pero lo que sí se sabe es que era usado por la milicia y poco a poco quedó en el abandono. Fue restaurado en el 2024 por iniciativa de un grupo de senderistas y el artista Qthaco.

The container is 1,131 meters above sea level and from there the views are spectacular. On one side, the panorama allows us to appreciate the capital of the state of Aragua, Maracay, as well as some parts of nearby cities such as Cagua and Turmero, and in the background, Lake Valencia. On the other side, we can see the nature of Henri Pittier, which, despite the desolate image left by the fires, still has many mountains and areas that have not been affected by the fire. I couldn't find any information about the year that container has been up there, but what is known is that it was used by the military and gradually fell into disrepair. It was restored in 2024 thanks to the initiative of a group of hikers and the artist Qthaco.

El lugar, las vistas, la merienda, la brisa y el merecido descanso hicieron que nos olvidaramos del tiempo y cuando vimos la hora ya iban a ser las 11 😬 y había que empezar a bajar porque el sol y el calor se iban a poner aún mas intensos 🥴🥵. Así que después de tomar algunas fotos mas, nos pusimos en marcha. Las subidas significan que el retorno será de puras bajadas así que hay que ir con cuidado y atentos al camino para evitar caídas y resbalones que son muy frecuentes en este tipo de terrenos arenosos y con piedras.

The place, the views, the snack, the breeze, and the well-deserved rest made us lose track of time, and when we checked the clock, it was almost 11:00 😬 and we had to start heading down because the sun and heat were going to get even more intense 🥴🥵. So, after taking a few more photos, we set off. The uphill climbs meant the return trip would be all downhill, so we had to be careful and pay attention to the path to avoid falls and slips, which are very common on this type of sandy and rocky terrain.

Esta perrita estaba arriba al lado del container, tenía collar así que a lo mejor es de los guardaparques y de vez en cuando sube, algunas personas, incluída mi hermana, le dieron comida y agua / Of course, there had to be a hiking dog, hehehe, we encountered one on every route. This dog was up there next to the container; she had a collar, so maybe she belongs to the park rangers and comes up there from time to time. Some people, including my sister, gave her food and water

El sol estaba en su punto máximo así que hacer fotos no era una tarea fácil y menos con un teléfono celular así que me concentré en la bajada y apenas me detuve para fotografiar alguna que otra flor, en el camino, y a mucha distancia uno del otro, había algunos árboles que ofrecían sombra y bajo los cuales se paraba la gente a refrescarse y descansar un poquito, también era el punto perfecto para tomar agua. No sufro de las rodillas ni me dolían las piernas pero los dedos de mis pies estaban bastante adoloridos por la presión de la bajada 🥴😬. Alrededor de las 12:30 estábamos llegando al puesto de guardaparques que está en la entrada del parque, ahí nos sentamos a descansar, comer y beber algo de lo que habíamos llevado y después caminamos hacia la parada para tomar el autobús hasta el terminal de Maracay y de ahí de regreso a La Victoria.

The sun was at its peak, so taking photos wasn't easy, especially with a cell phone. I focused on the descent and only stopped to photograph some little flowers. Along the way, and quite far apart, there were some trees offering shade where people stopped to cool off and rest. It was also the perfect spot to drink water. I don't have knee problems, and my legs didn't hurt, but my toes were quite sore from the pressure of the descent 🥴😬. Around 12:30, we arrived at the ranger station at the park entrance. There, we sat down to rest, eat, and drink some of what we had brought. Afterward, we walked to the bus stop to catch the bus to the Maracay terminal and from there back to La Victoria.

Subir el cerro del hotel Maracay es una experiencia muy interesante y una caminata que todo amante del senderismo que esté en Venezuela debería hacer. Algunas sugerencias para los que deseen conocer este lugar son: iniciar el ascenso lo más temprano posible para evitar las horas en que el sol está mas fuerte, llevar suficiente agua para mantenerse hidratado y algo para comer como frutas, un sándwich y algo dulce, usar gorra o sombrero, lentes de sol y protector solar.

Hiking up the Hotel Maracay hill is a very interesting experience and a hike that every hiking enthusiast in Venezuela should do. Some suggestions for those who want to visit this place are: start the ascent as early as possible to avoid the hottest hours of the day, bring enough water to stay hydrated and something to eat such as fruit, a sandwich, and something sweet, and wear a hat or cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
