La vida pasa en la plaza / Life happens in the plaza
Hello hivers. Plazas have always been an important part of cities. For centuries they have been used as meeting places, recreational spaces, and even commercial hubs. However, what characterizes them most, at least here in Venezuela, is that they are a space for pause, contemplation, and relaxation for anyone out and about who wants to take a few minutes to rest. In the city where I live, there are more than five plazas, but the main one, and the oldest, Plaza Ribas, is certainly the most beautiful and where you can enjoy all the qualities that make these public spaces so special. So I invite you to join me in enjoying these photos I took in our main plaza. It's not easy taking photos in a plaza because people stare at you, hahaha, so you have to do it discreetly and subtly, or when they're distracted 🤫🤭. Welcome.

There are many things you can do in plazas, whether it's sitting and chatting with friends or acquaintances, taking the children to play or ride bikes, walking the dog, enjoying an ice cream or any other treat, reading, eating, taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi signal, or simply watching people go by and even taking a nap 😴😅. One of the most important battles for Venezuelan independence, the Battle of La Victoria (February 12, 1814), took place in this plaza and it bears the name of General José Félix Ribas, the hero who led this battle. Although thousands of people breathed their last here—more than 2,000 victims, including dead and wounded—the atmosphere is one of peace and harmony.

The plazas offer a calm, peaceful, and pleasant atmosphere. In this particular plaza, it's very common to see people gathered every day, especially in the late afternoon, chatting about various topics or playing chess and dominoes. Ribas Plaza is located in the heart of the city's historic center, surrounded by many houses, ice cream shops, and establishments selling pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, donuts, and other treats. The Ribas Theater, the House of Culture, and the main church are also nearby, and just like in most plazas across the country, it has free Wi-Fi, making it a popular spot for people to stroll around and sit and enjoy the atmosphere that blends history, culture, leisure, and relaxation. Personally, I pass through this plaza frequently. Most of the time, I don't have time to sit and simply enjoy being there, but even as I walk through, I can feel the tranquility it exudes. It's always a pleasure to be there.

People pass through the plazas, but they are home to many animals. In Ribas Plaza, there are squirrels and iguanas; they are the biggest attraction and always draw attention when they come down from the trees. It's also very popular with birds such as parrots, pigeons, macaws, vultures, parakeets, canaries, conotos, doves, bluebirds, crested caracaras, and many more. There are also some cats and the occasional dog that catch the relaxed atmosphere and lie down for a nap, hehehe.

Plazas are part of the daily life of Venezuelans; I think it's a cultural thing, whether it's passing by early in the morning on the way to work to have a coffee, at midday to rest if you've been walking in the street all morning, or at the end of the afternoon after leaving work and taking the opportunity to clear your mind, eat an ice cream, chat for a while with friends, or attend some cultural activity in the surrounding spaces.

Plazas invite us to pause in our daily hustle and bustle; they're like an oasis within the chaos of the city. Is it the trees and vegetation? Is it the silent, steady, and imposing presence of the statue of the hero or national figure to whom it's dedicated? Why is it that as soon as we arrive at a plaza, our pace changes, the intensity slows down a bit, and we connect with the simple pleasure of sitting and watching people go by? What do you think? Do you like going to plazas? Do you experience the same thing?
