Belleza detrás de las rejas. Las aves del zoológico de Las Delicias (Aragua, Venezuela) / Beauty behind bars. The birds of Las Delicias Zoo (Aragua, Venezuela)

Saludos hivers. Una jaula siempre será una jaula, aunque sea inmensa, aunque sea hermosa, aunque esté dentro de la selva, por otro lado, la belleza, siempre será una belleza, aunque esté encerrada en una jaula. Tomando en cuenta esto, se me ocurrió compartir con ustedes las fotos que le hice a las aves que forman parte del zoológico de Las Delicias en Maracay (Edo. Aragua, Venezuela).

Hello hivers. A cage will always be a cage, even if it's immense, even if it's beautiful, even if it's inside the jungle, on the other hand, beauty will always be a beauty, even if it's locked in a cage. Taking this into account, it occurred to me to share with you the photos I took of the birds that are part of the Las Delicias zoo in Maracay (Aragua state, Venezuela).

En este zoológico los animales estaban en unos espacios muy reducidos y deprimentes, y por tal motivo, tenía muchísimos años sin visitarlo porque no sentía ningún interés en ver algo así. En el 2015 empezaron los trabajos de remodelación, reestructuración y reorganización de todas las áreas del zoológico, durante este tiempo el lugar estuvo cerrado hasta el año 2023, cuando reabrió sus puertas para el público, y con un cambio radical en sus espacios, así como en su misión y visión en la exhibición y conservación de las especies que alberga.

In this zoo the animals were in very small and depressing spaces, and for this reason, I had not visited it for many years because I did not feel any interest in seeing something like that. In 2015, work began on remodeling, restructuring and reorganizing all areas of the zoo. During this time, the place was closed until 2023, when it reopened its doors to the public, and with a radical change in its spaces, as well as in its mission and vision in the exhibition and conservation of the species it houses.

Al entrar al zoológico, las avestruces te dan la bienvenida, son aves muy curiosas y también son intimidantes, tan solo imaginar que una de estas aves te persigan con esas poderosas patas y ese pico fuerte, debe ser un poquito aterrador jajaja / When you enter the zoo, the ostriches welcome you, they are very curious birds and they are also intimidating, just imagining one of these birds chasing you with those powerful legs and that strong beak, it must be a little terrifying hahaha

En el zoológico de Las Delicias viven 80 especies de animales, sin embargo, en esta primera entrega de belleza enjaulada, me enfocaré en las aves. Este lugar cuenta con el aviario más grande de Latinoamérica, con una capacidad para albergar a más de mil aves. Cabe destacar que todas las aves que están aquí pertenecen a especies que viven en Venezuela, no hay aves exóticas. Algunas de estas aves forman parte de programas de reproducción y repoblación, como es el caso del águila harpía.

In total 80 species of animals live in the Las Delicias zoo, however, in this first part of caged beauty, I will focus on birds. This place has the largest aviary in Latin America, with the capacity to house more than a thousand birds. It should be noted that all the birds that are here belong to species that live in Venezuela, there are no exotic birds. Some of these birds are part of reproduction and repopulation programs, as is the case of the harpy eagle.

Este aviario de inmersión es el más grande de Venezuela y Latinoamérica, está compuesto por dos grandes secciones en forma de cúpula de más de 6 metros de altura cada una, las cuales están interconectadas por un pasillo que permite al visitante tener una experiencia más cercana con las aves / This immersion aviary is the largest in Venezuela and Latin America, it's composed of two large dome-shaped sections more than 6 meters high each, which are interconnected by a corridor that allow the visitor to have a closer experience with the birds

Entre las aves más representativas de la fauna venezolana están las psitaciformes, a esta familia pertenecen los loros, y las guacamayas, aves coloridas, alegres y ruidosas, así como somos los venezolanos jejeje. Otras aves que comparten hábitat con ellas son los tucanes.

Among the most representative birds of the Venezuelan fauna are the psittaciformes, parrots and macaws belong to this family, colorful, happy and noisy birds, just like we Venezuelans are hehehe. Other birds that share habitat with them are toucans.

Mientras caminábamos por el túnel del aviario, el cual permite tener una amplia visión del espacio, las aves estaban inquietas en sus platos y comederos esperando el desayuno. Dos grupos de cuidadores iban pasando con un carrito parecido a los que hay en los supermercados pero más grande, sobre él tenían diferentes envases, cada uno identificado con la especie a quien correspondía su contenido. Frutas y semillas para la mayoría, pescado para las aves de río y carne o pollo para las aves de presa y las carroñeras, también ví que en algunos comederos echaban una especie de mezcla que parecía una masa muy suave.

As we walked through the aviary tunnel, which allows us to have a wide view of the space, the birds were restless in their dishes and feeders waiting for breakfast. Two groups of caregivers were passing by with a cart similar to those in supermarkets but larger, on which they had different containers, each one identified with the species to which its contents corresponded. Fruits and seeds for the majority, fish for the river birds and meat or chicken for the birds of prey and scavengers. I also saw that in some feeders they poured a kind of mixture that looked like a very soft dough.

Como ya todos sabrán, hay aves que son más interactivas que otras, las guacamayas son muy simpáticas y curiosas, incluso más que los loros, y eran las que más se acercaban a la gente, sin embargo, hubo un ave que apenas vió que me agaché para poder fotografiarla mejor, vino corriendo hacia mí, no sé si fue porque era la hora de la comida y pensó que yo era uno de los cuidadores, o si fue porque mi presencia realmente le llamó la atención, a los pocos minutos de estar frente a ella deduje que era lo segundo porque repartieron la comida y se quedó ahí conmigo 😃😁.

As everyone already knows, there are birds that are more interactive than others, macaws are very friendly and curious, even more so than parrots, and they were the ones that got closest to people, however, there was one bird that as soon as he saw that I crouched down so I could photograph him better, he came running towards me, I don't know if it was because it was meal time and he thought I was one of the keepers, or if it was because my presence really caught his attention, a few minutes after being in front of him I deduced that it was the latter because they distributed the food and he stayed there with me 😃😁.

El cóndor real o rey zamuro (Sarcoramphus papa), es una ave realmente hermosa e imponente, a diferencia de los otros carroñeros, que incluye a los buitres y cóndores, y que en su mayoría son negros, este tiene unos colores sumamente llamativos. Empecé a hablarle y parece que le gustó posar para mí. Observando las enormes alas de esta ave me dió tristeza verla ahí encerrada sin poder realizar los espectaculares vuelos a gran altura que las caracteriza ☹️. Este aviario es enorme, sí, pero no es el cielo infinito.

The royal condor or king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), is a truly beautiful and imposing bird, unlike the other scavengers, which include vultures and condors, and which are mostly black, this one has extremely striking colors. I started talking to him and he seemed to like posing for me. Looking at the enormous wings of this bird, it made me sad to see him locked up there without being able to make the spectacular high-altitude flights that characterize them ☹️. This aviary is huge, yes, but it's not the infinite sky.

Había dos, el otro estaba más interesado en la comida y voló hacia el otro lado a comer la carne que le habían dejado, luego se paró sobre el túnel justo sobre mi cabeza, me moví un poquito por si acaso le daban ganas de dejarme un regalito 💩😬🤭. Esta especie no presenta dimorfismo sexual así que no sé cuál de los dos era el macho y cuál la hembra.

There were two, the other was more interested in the food and flew to the other side to eat the meat that had been left for him, then he stood on the tunnel right above my head, I moved a little just in case he felt like leaving me a little gift 💩😬🤭. This species doesn't present sexual dimorphism so I don't know which of the two was the male and which was the female.

Es importante destacar que en el aviario hay varías secciones divididas porque no todas las aves pueden compartir el mismo espacio por diversos motivos, un ejemplo de esto son las aves de presa y rapiña, las cuales están juntas, las guacamayas, los tucanes y los loros también están juntos en un área acondicionada a sus necesidades / It's important to note that in the aviary there are several divided sections because not all birds can share the same space for various reasons. An example of this is birds of prey and scavengers, which are together, macaws, toucans and parrots are also together in an area adapted to their needs

Aparte de las aves que están en el aviario, hay una gran cantidad de ellas que están sueltas volando libremente dentro y supongo que también fuera del zoológico jajaja, la mayoría son garzas, palomas y muchas aves de diferentes especies, las más pequeñas, y que
caben por el enrejado, incluso aprovechan para alimentarse de los comederos jejeje, de hecho, ví varios colibríes entrar al aviario. También ví algunos zamuros (buitres). El zoológico está cerca del Parque Nacional Henry Pittier, el más grande de la Cordillera de la Costa, así que las visitas aladas que recibe son infinitas.

Apart from the birds that are in the aviary, there are a large number of them that are loose flying freely inside and I suppose also outside the zoo hahaha, most of them are herons, pigeons and many birds of different species, the smallest ones, they fit through the trellis and even take advantage of it to feed on the feeders hehehe, in fact, I saw several hummingbirds enter the aviary. I also saw some vultures. The zoo is close to the Henry Pittier National Park, the largest in the Coastal Mountains, so the winged visits it receives are endless.

En el zoológico de Las Delicias también hay lugar para las aves de corral como patos, gansos, gallinas y pavos reales, estas aves también están sueltas y se les puede ver caminando y escarbando la hierba a sus anchas.

At the Las Delicias Zoo there is also a place for poultry such as ducks, geese, chickens and peacocks. These birds are also loose and can be seen walking and scratching the grass at will.

Fue grato ver cómo cambió radicalmente este zoológico, y aunque este tipo de lugares no están entre mis favoritos, por lo menos ahora dejó de ser una simple exhibición de animales y pasó a formar parte de los diversos proyectos de recuperación y repoblación de especies vulnerables. Es irónico lo que pasa con el ser humano, primero lleva casi a la extinción a las especies, y después dedica grandes cantidades de dinero, tiempo y personal calificado para intentar recuperar lo que él mismo destruyó 🙄🤨😒🤦🏻‍♀️.

It was pleasant to see how this zoo radically changed, and although these types of places are not among my favorites, at least now it's no longer a simple animal exhibition and has become part of the various recovery and repopulation projects for vulnerable species. It's ironic what happens to human beings, first they lead species almost to extinction, and then they dedicate large amounts of money, time and qualified personnel to try to recover what they themselves destroyed 🙄🤨😒🤦🏻‍♀️.

Disfruté estar rodeada de tantas aves pero siempre preferiré verlas volando libremente en sus respectivos hábitats, lamentablemente, y por culpa del ser humano, algunas de ellas tienen que perder su libertad para formar parte de los proyectos de reproducción y así poder asegurar la supervivencia de sus especies. I enjoyed being surrounded by so many birds but I will always prefer to see them flying freely in their respective habitats. Unfortunately, and because of human beings, some of them have to lose their freedom to take part in reproduction projects and thus be able to ensure the survival of their species.
