60 gatos esterilizados gracias a una jornada a bajo costo 🐱👨🏽‍⚕️ / 60 cats sterilized thanks to a low-cost day 🐱👨🏽‍⚕️

Saludos hivers. La esterilización es la mejor forma de controlar la población de perros y gatos, la mayoría de las personas no piensan en las consecuencias de la reproducción descontrolada, pero aquí les traigo unas cifras que aunque parecen exageradas, no lo son. Veamos este sencillo ejemplo, una perra entra en celo dos veces al año, en promedio puede llegar a tener unos 16 cachorros, si todos son hembras, en un año tendrán a su vez dos celos y 98 nuevos cachorros vendrán al mundo. Si este mismo ejemplo lo hacemos con gatos, la cifra casi se triplica. Una gata tiene 4 celos al año, si en cada uno de esos partos nacen 4 gatitos, serían 16 gatitos en un año, si todos son hembras, serán 256 gatitos mas entre todas, la pregunta es, ¿Conseguirán todos un hogar y una familia? Probablemente no, la mayoría vivirá en la calle, comiendo de la basura, expuestos a los peligros, siguiendo el mismo patrón de reproducción y sus vidas serán difíciles y cortas 😞😥.

Hello hivers. Sterilization is the best way to control the dog and cat population. Most people don't think about the consequences of uncontrolled reproduction, but here are some numbers that seem exaggerated, but aren't. Let's look at this simple example: a female dog goes into heat twice a year and, on average, can have about 16 puppies. If they are all female, they will also have two heat cycles in one year, resulting in 98 new puppies. If we apply this same example to cats, the number almost triples. A female cat has four heat cycles a year. If four kittens are born in each of those births, that would be 16 kittens in a year. If they are all female, that would be 256 more kittens altogether. The question is, will they all find homes and families? Probably not, most will live on the streets, eating from the garbage, exposed to dangers, following the same reproductive pattern and their lives will be difficult and short 😞😥.

Desde hace unos ocho años más o menos la población de gatos en mi ciudad ha ido en aumento, lamentablemente el motivo por el cual esto ha sucedido es por la irresponsabilidad y la falta de conciencia de la gente que han convertido algunos lugares de la ciudad en zonas de abandono 🙄😤. Esto trae como consecuencia que los gatos vayan creando colonias donde se reproducen sin control, lo que a la larga empieza a su vez a generar problemas con las personas que viven cerca de ellos ☹️.

For about eight years or so, the cat population in my city has been increasing. Unfortunately, this is due to the irresponsibility and lack of awareness of people who have turned some places in the city into abandoned areas 🙄😤. This results in cats creating colonies where they reproduce uncontrollably, which in turn begins to cause problems for the people who live near them ☹️.

En vista de todo esto, varios proteccionistas nos reunimos para solicitar una jornada de esterilización aquí en la ciudad. En Venezuela existe la Misión Nevado, este es un programa social del gobierno que se encarga de ofrecer servicios gratuitos de atención veterinaria así como jornadas de esterilización para perros y gatos. Llevamos unos cuantos meses tratando de solicitar una de esas jornadas gratuitas, pero no es tan fácil, hay que tener paciencia y cumplir con ciertos protocolos 🙄. En lugar de eso conseguimos traer una jornada que no es gratis pero sí a un costo bastante accesible para las personas, $15 las hembras y $10 los machos. En un consultorio privado el costo es superior a $60.

Because of this, several animal protection activists gathered to request a sterilization program here in the city. In Venezuela, there's the Nevado Mission, a government social program that offers free veterinary care services as well as sterilization programs for dogs and cats. We've been trying to request one of these free programs for a few months, but it's not that easy; you have to be patient and follow certain protocols. 🙄 Instead, we managed to arrange a program that isn't free, but at a fairly affordable cost: $15 for females and $10 for males. In a private practice the cost is more than $60.

Para la proteccionista que trajo a esta gata callejera fue un milagro poder agarrarla para traerla a la jornada, cuando intentamos sacarla de la cesta para meterla en la funda de la almohada se nos escapó y casi se va hacia el jardín del edificio 😬😫, tuvimos suerte porque justo en ese momento abrieron la puerta del salón donde estaban operando y la gata se metió ahí 😱 jajaja, y pudieron atraparla 🥵, una gata realmente salvaje 🥴 / For the protectionist who brought this stray cat, it was a miracle to be able to catch her to bring her to the event. When we tried to take her out of the basket to put her in the pillowcase, she escaped and almost went into the building's garden 😬😫. We were lucky because just at that moment they opened the door to the room where they were operating and the cat got in there 😱 hahaha, and they were able to catch her 🥵, a truly wild cat 🥴

La jornada se realizó este sábado 18 de octubre en las instalaciones del edificio de una de las proteccionistas que organizaron la actividad, específicamente en el salón de fiestas del mismo, ya el equipo médico había venido a evaluar el lugar con anterioridad y había dado su aprobación. Aunque no formé parte del equipo organizador por motivos de disponibilidad de tiempo, asistí como proteccionista de apoyo para documentar la actividad y poder evaluar la misma, analizar lo bueno, lo malo, lo que se puede mejorar y así tener un balance para las próximas jornadas que queremos traer.

The event took place this Saturday, October 18th, at the facilities of one of the proteccionists who organized the event, specifically in the party room. The medical team had already arrived previously to evaluate the place and had given their approval. Although I wasn't part of the organizing team due to time constraints, I attended as a support to document the event and evaluate it, analyzing the positives, the negatives, and what could be improved, thus providing a baseline for the upcoming events we plan to hold.

Apenas nos dieron la aprobación empezamos a promocionar la jornada a través de las redes sociales y entre nuestros contactos, amistades y conocidos, se creó un grupo de WhatsApp para todos los que se iban inscribiendo o querían solicitar información. Para ser aceptados en la jornada los gatos debían cumplir con los siguientes requisitos, las hembras, tener mínimo 6 meses de edad, no estar embarazadas ni en periodo de lactancia, y los machos, tener mínimo un año y medio de edad, por supuesto, en ambos casos, estar saludables y con buen peso. Se anotaron mas de 100 gatos, sin embargo, como nos dieron la fecha tres días antes, muchas personas se retiraron por diversos motivos, entre ellos, no tenían el dinero, tenían otro compromiso para ese día, etc 🤷🏻‍♀️.

As soon as we received approval, we began promoting the event through social media and created a WhatsApp group among our contacts, friends, and acquaintances for anyone who had signed up or wanted to request information. To be accepted, cats had to comply the following requirements: females had to be at least 6 months old and neither pregnant nor nursing; and males had to be at least a year and a half old. Of course, in both cases, they had to be healthy and of good weight. More than 100 cats signed up; however, since the date was announced three days early, many people dropped out for various reasons, including not having the money, having other commitments for that day, etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ninguna mascota se entrega a sus dueños hasta que no haya despertado de la anestesia, es una regla, se hace así para aprovechar la presencia del veterinario y preservar la vida del animal en caso de que surja alguna complicación o el gato esté tardando demasiado en despertar, es por eso que las personas que llevan a sus mascotas a esterilizar o a cualquier otra cirugía, tienen que tener paciencia y esperar / No pet is given to its owners until it has woken up from anesthesia, it's a rule, it's done this way to take advantage of the presence of the veterinarian and preserve the life of the animal in case any complication arises or the cat is taking too long to wake up, that's why people who take their pets to be sterilized or to any other surgery, have to be patient and wait

Los machos serían los primeros en ser castrados ya que el proceso es mas rápido, y por eso debían llegar a las 9, el equipo médico y sus asistentes iba a llegar a las 10 pero llegaron mas temprano así que la jornada empezó antes. Después de hacer el pago correspondiente, la persona encargada de llevar el control, anotaba el nombre y teléfono del dueño y le daba un número, ese número se le ponía a cada gato con una cinta plástica en la pata para poder identificarlo al momento de entregárselo a su dueño. Antes de entrar a la sala de operaciones hay que meter al gato en una funda de almohada para que se tranquilice y se le pueda poner la anestesia sin problemas en caso de que sea muy agresivo o salvaje.

The males were the first to be neutered since the process is faster, and so they had to arrive at 9:00. The medical team and their assistants were supposed to arrive at 10:00, but they arrived earlier, so the day started earlier. After making the corresponding payment, the person in charge of the records would write down the owner's name and phone number and give them a number. This number was attached to each cat's paw with a plastic strip so they could be identified when they were returned to their owner. Before entering the operating room, the cat had to be placed in a pillowcase so it could calm down and be safely anesthetized in case it was very aggressive or wild.

Para los machos la cirugía es mínimamente invasiva, se abre el saco testicular, se extraen los testículos y se cose, en las hembras la incisión es por el costado y la herida es muy pequeña, después deben llevar puesta una faja por varios días para que no puedan quitarse los puntos, ya saben como son los gatos de inquietos 😂😬. Por cada veinte gatos que pagaran su esterilización, el equipo médico nos ofreció cinco cupos gratis, los cuales se usaron para operar a varios gatos callejeros, en total fueron diez los que se beneficiaron, pero debieron ser 15 ya que el total de gatos que pagaron fue casi de 60 😕, así que varios de los gatos callejeros que los proteccionistas habían llevado tendrán que esperar a una próxima jornada ☹️.

For males, the surgery is minimally invasive, the testicular sac is opened, the testicles are removed and stitched, in females the incision is on the side and the wound is very small, then they must wear a girdle for several days so they cannot remove the stitches, you know how restless cats are 😂😬. For every twenty cats that paid for their sterilization, the medical team offered us five free shares, which were used to operate on several stray cats, in total there were ten that benefited, but it should have been 15 since the total number of cats that paid was almost 60 😕, so several of the stray cats that the protectionists had brought will have to wait for a next day ☹️.

Aunque estos gatos parecen dormidos, ya despertaron y por eso nos los entregaron y yo les puse las fajas, simplemente están mareados por la anestesia y así estarán durante varias horas, como si estuviesen borrachos o en un viaje 🙃🚀😂, Estas dos gatas son de la calle / Although these cats seem asleep, they have already woken up and that's why they were given to us and I put the girdles on them. Los gatos que quedaron en el salón son de algunas personas que viven en el edificio donde se hizo jornada / The cats that were left in the living room belong to some people who live in the building where the day was held

La jornada terminó a la una de la tarde y el equipo médico y sus ayudantes se fueron a la 1:30, al final solamente nos quedamos cinco proteccionistas para ayudar a limpiar el salón, los pasillos y la planta baja del edificio, recoger la basura y dejar todo ordenado. He estado en varias jornadas de esterilización, y una de las cosas que mas le puede impresionar a alguien que nunca ha asistido a una es el olor a orina jajaja, es un efecto de la anestesia, los animales se orinan mientras están aún sedados sobre el piso esperando a que despierten y cuando se los entregan a sus dueños están todos mojados y con ese olor tan fuerte a amoníaco 😆. Tuvimos que echar bastante cloro y aromatizante para quitar ese olor de los pisos jajaja.

The day ended at 1:00 p.m., and the medical team and their assistants left at 1:30 p.m. In the end, only five of us were left to help clean the hall, hallways, and ground floor of the building, pick up the trash, and leave everything tidy. I've been to several sterilization days, and one of the things that can most impress someone who has never attended one is the smell of urine, haha. It's an effect of the anesthesia. The animals urinate on the floor while they're still sedated, waiting for them to wake up, and when they're handed back to their owners, they're all wet and with that strong smell of ammonia. We had to use a lot of bleach and air freshener to get rid of that smell from the floors, haha.

Fue una jornada bastante exitosa, las personas se fueron contentas con sus gatos, ahora deberán seguir las indicaciones del veterinario y darles los medicamentos correspondientes, el antiinflamatorio, el antibiótico y uno para el dolor, así como la limpieza y el cuidado de la herida para que sane rápido y sin complicaciones 😉.

It was a very successful day. The people left happy with their cats. Now they must follow the veterinarian's instructions and give them the appropriate medication: anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and pain reliever, as well as clean and care for the wound so it heals quickly and without complications.

Esterilizar es salvar vidas, si no tienes mascotas puedes ayudar esterilizando a algún perro o gato sin hogar, con esto no solamente evitarás que se reproduzca y que sus crías vivan en la calle, también los ayudarás a tener una mejor calidad de vida, los machos no se pelearán por el dominio de las hembras, y las hembras vivirán mas tranquilas porque no estarán pariendo a cada rato. Sterilizing is saving lives. If you don't have pets, you can help by spaying a homeless dog or cat.
