Saving my brother || No knowledge is wasted
After few days of fever, stomach pain, weakness and lost of appetite to eat even for his most favorite meal, my brother's condition got severe, so we took him to the hospital right away to ascertain the real cause of the feverish conditions. After physical examination, the doctor instructed some laboratory tests that were assigned for him to conduct, such as a Widal test and blood culture were done at the hospital and showed that he had a severe case of typhoid fever with no presence of malaria parasite found .
The results were read out to us by the doctor, who told us the germs were already multiplying very quickly in my brother's body, which was leading to systemic infections and symptoms that could become life threatening if we Don't commence his treatment right away. Because the doctor knew how bad the infection was, he suggested a mix of antibiotics given through an IV and pills to stop the germs from growing. The main treatments that were recommended were an IV Cetrozol injection, which is a strong broad spectrum antibiotic that is often used to treat serious bacterial infections and Flagyl tablets (metronidazole), which kill anaerobic bacteria and some parasites.
since I was already familiar with the drugs mentioned and how to administer it to patients from my knowledge in healthcare and my time of industry attachment at my Uncle's hospital , I requested from the doctor if I could take my brother home and commence the treatment myself . The Doctor quickly agreed with me knowing the knowledge I have acquired during my industrial attachment at my uncle's hospital will make it easier for me to continue my brother's treatment since all the diagnosis have been done professionally and drugs recommended for the treatment acquired. For five days in a row, the IV Cetrozol shot of 10ml water for injection mix with ceftriaxone sodium would be given once a day through an IV injection. It quickly killed the germs that cause typhoid fever because it was a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
I made sure the shot was given to him in a clean area of his hand with the vein clearly visible and the dose was carefully calculated based on his weight and how bad the bacteria infection was in his body. There were clear signs of change in the first 48 hours of me administering the first dosage. His fever ,blood pressure that was reading high all slowly went down and the stomach pain and loose stools that were bothering him started to go away. At the same time, he was put on a Flagyl (Metronidazole) regimen 400mg tablets taken three times a day after meals. Flagyl helped to fight the anaerobic bacterial overgrowth in his gut and bloodstream. This combination treatment proved powerful because while the IV Cetrozol targeted the Salmonella typhi bacteria responsible for the typhoid fever, the Flagyl helped eliminate secondary bacterial infections and prevent gastrointestinal complications that often accompany typhoid fever.
Supportive care was also kept. From my experience I told him to drink plenty of fluids, including Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), to prevent dehydration caused by the fever and diarrhea. His meals were changed to soft, easily digestible foods, such as rice, pap, and boiled plantains, to reduce stress on his healing digestive system.i also bought him paracetamol to help control his fever and headaches while the antibiotics took effect in fight the bacteria in his system. By the fourth day, his energy levels started to return. His temperature began to stabilize within the normal range and he started eating more comfortably without vomiting or feeling nauseous. The doctor called us time to time to monitor his vitals and laboratory readings throughout the treatment to ensure there were no complications such as liver stress, which can occasionally appear with prolonged antibiotic use. Fortunately, his liver function stayed normal. After the fifth day of IV antibiotics, the doctor called that I should stopped the Cetrozol injection and directed that he continue with oral Flagyl tablets for another three days at home to finish the full 8 day course. In addition, he was also given a probiotic supplement to restore the healthy bacteria in his gut, which had been affected by the strong antibiotics. By the end of the treatment, a repeat blood test was done and it showed a large drop in the typhoid markers. His Widal test was negative and the symptoms had totally resolved. He was cleared after the last check up. With a follow up instructions, including avoiding street food, drinking only clean or boiled, or bottled water and keeping personal hygiene to prevent reinfection.
This experience taught us the importance of early medical action and proper diagnosis. The combined use of IV Cetrozol injection and Flagyl tablets was very successful in controlling and clearing the bacterial growth caused by typhoid fever. Thanks to this targeted treatment method, my brother made a full recovery without any lasting complications. I was very excited on my part because my knowledge of science helped us in a reduced cause and accorded me the chance to fully take control and care for my brother to his full recovery. I was also glad the doctor believed in my knowledge and didn't insist on his admission in the hospital since the case was very much easily handled from home with his supervision.
