My Groundnut farm
Growing groundnuts at my farm requires careful planning, dedication and consistent effort from time to time in order to keep a clean farm far from rodents, insects and pests . I begin by ensuring the land is well prepared before planting. This starts with clearing the field of weeds, grasses and other unwanted vegetation that might have grown naturally due to the rainy season and the fertility of the land. Once the land is clean, I plough it thoroughly to soften the soil and allow proper aeration, so the plants get the amount of water required. Sometimes, I also harrow the field to break up clumps of soil and make the groundnut seeds easier to plant and easy for the groundnut seeds to receive nutrients too. I test the soil to ensure it has the right components and nutrients and if needed, I apply organic manure or fertilizer to enrich the soil fertility. but I hardly use organic fertilizer to boost my soil fertility due to the hazardous effects after long use of it . This I understood from previous farming years and complaints being shared by my fellow farmers.
So I mostly use crop rotation as another method of increasing the soil fertility,by planting nitrogen fixing plants and rotating it with other plants that need nitrogen as its main growth ingredients.

During planting season, I select high-quality groundnut seeds that are disease resistant and suitable for the climate in my farming area. I plant the seeds at the right depth and spacing to ensure they grow properly without competition and neatly too to enhance proper ventilation. I always pay attention to the weather conditions, ensuring I plant early enough to take advantage of the rainy season, which groundnuts need for healthy growth and well improved seeds.

After planting, I regularly weed the farm to reduce competition for nutrients and space that can be caused by weed plants growing naturally as the results of the rich soil fertility. I use hand tools like hoes for weeding and sometimes herbicides in a controlled manner. Using herbicide for a farm is strongly recommended to be done by professionals to avoid damaging your own hard work. Pest control is another critical part of my maintenance routine. I inspect my crops frequently for signs of pest infestation or disease. If I notice any, I act quickly by applying natural or chemical solutions that won’t harm the soil or the environment.depending on the kind of pest affecting the plants. Other times I just simply cut the affected area of the groundnut plant affected by the pest .
. Water management is key, although groundnuts don’t need excessive watering, I make sure the farm gets enough moisture during dry spells, using watering cans or small irrigation systems.
As the groundnuts mature, I monitor their development closely. I know the crop is ready for harvest when the leaves turn yellow and start to dry up and fall on their own. But now they are still growing , groundnuts usually take 3 - 5 months before they are ready for harvest.
In conclusion, keeping a healthy and clean groundnut farm requires my own hard work, but it is rewarding when it's harvesting period. With consistency and proper care,at the end of the 5 months needed for its total maturity,I will be able to produce healthy, high-yield groundnuts that I can consume, store, or sell for money .
