Not Just shit Photos

twrldn95997.jpg

Back in September 2024 I started a community called Shit Photography which was primarily a place for me to drop some random posts that didn't fit into other communities; all of my communities have that purpose. Naturally, a few others posted there too and I didn't discourage it.

I called it Shit Photography because the other photography communities focus on good photography even though possibly some of what's posted there could be described as shit. What is considered good or bad is up to the individual though of course so there's no judgement.

I don't think my photography is very good, not compared to others I've seen anyway, but I also don't think it's total shit either; because I'm not a photographer, just a man who takes photos from time to time, I'm not inclined to put any expectation on my own photos but I actually care what photos I put into my posts because I want to represent myself as well as I can.

I've seen some terrible photos represented on people's posts and I don't understand it. A wildly out-of-focus photo isn't going to attract the right sort of attention and when it comes to building a Hive account following one needs all the help they can get. So, would I ever put terrible photos onto my posts? No. But do I think my photos are awesome? No.

When I called the community Shit Photography I was being sarcastic; it comes with being Australian I guess. I just didn't stop to think people would go out of their way to post their worst photos and represent themselves in that way. Do they think they're going to get upvoted solidly for it? Not by me they're not!

So, I decided to amend the community name a little.

Not Just shit Photos

Users are free to post as they like, that's the freedom the blockchain provides, and like I said earlier, what's perceived as good or bad is up to the beholder, however I wanted to apply a slight name change to give those like me who are not photographers but still care how they represent themselves on their posts an opportunity to post here should they wish to and without the overarching banner of Shit Photography looming overhead.

There's a few rules as with all of my communities as below. They're there to keep continuity and consistency across my communities and also to ensure it's a comfortable place for all.

  • Shit photos & photos of shit stuff permitted
  • Awesome (non-shit) Photos are very welcome
  • English words only, no dual language posts/titles
  • Taking yourself too seriously is not permitted
  • Write some text explaining your photos
  • Photos must be ones you personally took
  • No AI or stock images...they're super-shit!
  • No plagiarism of text or images
  • Don't be a wanker or abusive...or a dick head
  • No cross posting please, they will be muted

I'm totally comfortable if no one other than myself posts in my communities, they're really just buckets to categorise my own posts but inevitably people come along and post there now and then and that's ok too. I don't mind that, and if people wish to represent themselves a particular way that's ok too; I felt inclined to open up the opportunity to post differently though hence the name change to Not Just Shit Photos and a slight adjustment in the community rules.

That's quiet a good idea from your side sir. Everyone has there own thinking about their photos and skill. But by looking your photos you aren't too bad to click such amazing photos

I will say it's a good opportunity for people like us also who are not exactly photographer's but love taking photos of places, events and moments at random times

I appreciate this community for providing such opportunity

I had no clue you had (yet another) community. Since I constantly forget to take photos and when I do they're rarely filed anywhere useful, I'm unlikely to post in this community. However, I feel compelled to comment because I appreciated (yet again) your strong, no-nonsense, unapologetic expression of boundaries. That's for saying what you want, being who you want to be and telling people exactly how they need to be if they want to be in your space. This is role modelling I need.

I'm pretty direct and, I like to think, clear.

I also have no tolerance for people who think they can come along and act as they see fit (here or in real life) without the possibility of repercussions for behaviours that are not acceptable. So anyway my communities, all 357 of them, have my name on them and therefore are mine to administer as I see fit, and I do. I like to think I'm fair in doing so but can be rather brutal (let's call it brutally uncompromising) when people feel they don't need to comply and have a bit of a crack at me for administering my communities as I see fit. I'm not the walk away or turn the other cheek sort of fellow...and when they cite freedom...well, I have freedom too, and am happy to use it. (I'm a big softie really.) 😉

Or not.

Anyway, it seems I'll never see your posts in this community and that's fine, we must each do as we feel is right. Right? 😊

Indeed. Or since I feel inspired to poke the bear and I hear you don't like tokens much... !INDEED (Or is that a fallacy?)

Meanwhile, do you really have 357 communities? Am I being gullible here? Were you being facetious? Or are you really crazy organised when it comes to adminstering?

I think that calling up those shit tokens on people's posts is like littering, throwing garbage on people's posts; so no, I don't like it. It's nothing more than spam and makes Hive look fucken ridiculous from the outside looking in.

I only post in my own communities though so have them all muted in my communities so they don't pop up. I just don't see any value in it. If people want to give me tokens for free they should make it BTC.

I have the following communities:

Weekend Engagement
School Days
Outdoors and More
Lego
Galenkp's Stuff
Not Just Shit Photos

I'm a mod in my brother's community Reflections as well.

So not 357, but I'm getting there.

This community name glow-up is brilliant. Still cheeky, but with room for quality snaps too!

Yeah, it sent the wrong message calling it shit photos so I thought a slight name adjustment might make it seem more appropriate for people who take better photos. Let's see if anyone other than me uses it but in truth I don't mind if no one does. It's their own choice.

I've always found your pictures spectacular, especially the lights and contrasts, so I understood the sarcasm, but surely many people haven't... and have posted weird things, blurred, shaky, cropped photos.

I hope this name change will attract more people and with good entries. By the way I have the apple pie and you haven't knocked on the door...it's going to run out and I won't leave you a slice.😁

Thank you, and yeah some people have posted some totally fucked photos which in truth has prompted me to make a change. I guess I asked for it with the previous title.

Save me some apple pie, I'm on my way!

I'm already preparing the coffee... and the mate... you haven't had mate, you're missing out on something wonderful!

I'm not sure about mate, I mean I've not tried it, but I think it'd have to be very good for me to prefer it over coffee, and I'm not sure that anything is that good.

If you are used to coffee I assure you that you won't change it for mate, but I imagine you drinking mate as an Argentinean and it's great!

I'm Australian so mate means, a friend or buddy (among other things) - it's actually quite a complicated term to be honest. Anyway, I suppose I could drink Argentinian mate and even eat some Argentinian beef...even though none of them are as good as the Australian products.

(Argentinian beef tastes like old boot leather on the soles of my cowboy boots when compared to the awesomeness of Australian beef.)

Just saying.

hahahahahaha Argentinian meat is super tasty, especially lamb and cow!!! You make me die laughing hahaha

Argentinian Empanadas???? You have to try them!

I've tried them, empanadas, (I have an Argentine friend) and tber s a huge Argentinian community here, and they ar bloody fantastic! I love empanadas. The problem is they're not good for me. I still like them though.

This is interesting.
And I love it that you changed the name to "not just shit" because random photos can be beautiful and unique too.

📷🤔 As I said in my previous post, HIVE never ceases to amaze me.

This community makes a lot of sense.

We all have those beautiful but imperfect photos. Either the framing is bad, or there are elements that are left over and we don't want to manipulate them in Photoshop, or the incorrect light exposure that even created a curious silhouette.

These don't fit anywhere. Here, well argued, is a good point for photographic recycling.📸♻️

I promise to make an appearance, because I have many of these beautiful but imperfect photos.🫢

Most of my photos are imperfect, a scan through my post feed will demonstrate that; but they're mine,as were the moments in which they were taken, and so I value them. I figured other people will feel the same about their own and thought this might be a good place for a few of those to post them.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

You are very self-critical. Relentless, even.
(As for that, we can create a club together😂).

Sorry but I don't agree. If all photography communities featured photos like yours, HIVE would be a perfect place.

My opinion is based on my knowledge, and I don't want to be nice to you. (I teach photography classes and I know how to analyze and criticize a photograph from different perspectives).

I can see some imperfections in some of your photos. But even these, I don't consider them bad.

Well then, aren't you a nice fellow, thank you.

I am very critical of myself in all things, and I have reasons for that which are not for Hive, but certainly with my photos I am. Still, as I said, it's the memories behind them that matter. I don't Photoshop them because each is a snippet of life, my life, and it's imperfect and so should my photos be.

I'm not interested enough in photography to learn how to get better, maybe one day when I've done some other things to the levels I need to achieve.

Thanks for your kind words, I greatly (and humbly) appreciate it.

The way I would describe your picture - trying to help here not to sound a smartass - is overprocessed; Too much saturation (sky looks fake), too much sharpness ( my eyes bleed from details).

Pretty nice picture otherwise; the angle is good, the sky is nice and the subject is cool!

I'll have to start using this community a bit more. I do have some posts where I used a blurry photo, but there was a reason for it and it fit the theme of the post. I think that opening photo is pretty great!

Yeah, there's a time and place for blurred images, but so many continually post them for some reason, representing themselves as totally shit, and I don't understand why a person would do that. I just moved on and find someone more worth of my time.

Sounds smart. I usually try to put my best foot forward with my photos.

That shows, for sure and I do the same. I'm content in not having perfect ones, or even good ones...I'm not a photographer so it's not on my radar to make amazing photos. It's certainly on my radar to represent myself as well as my limited abilities can however.

Time flies!!!

I’m one of those who witnessed the birth of the community and contributed to it. Although I'm not a great photographer, I do like my photos to turn out as well as possible, but they still end up being pretty shabby. So the community has been a perfect fit for me.

The new name suits it very well; the community has evolved, and I have no doubt it will continue to do so. It’s a pleasure to have a place for those who are less experienced in photography (like us)

As I think I said in the first post I made about the community, most of us are not photography, just people who take photos, and that's ok although I don't think it means a person should not take care and pride in how they represent themselves. I've had a few people just dump some terrible photos, our of focus rubbish, and I think that reflects badly on the quality of the individual.

You've contributed well and I know you will again.

Hi @Galenkp, no wonder you changed the name of the community. I've sometimes thought you were going to mute some of your posts for not posting shitty pictures.

You know I don't post much, but I'll keep posting from time to time, I've always felt comfortable in this community.

Regards.

It was an error of judgement on my part but one that is now rectified. I know you don't post often but also that you respect yourself enough to not post rubbish.

Thank you for these words. I don't post junk for a very simple matter, my blog is my image. And I don't understand how other creators don't see it that way.

People are rewarded for being average and mediocre these days and so they'll be both of those things more often, a little more each time...it's a race to the bottom.

This you comment is very much related to your post about Albert Jacka (at least I see it that way). That I may not read the book doesn't mean that I don't understand the message of the post, which goes beyond the book. And to tell the truth, I don't find it very appetizing to participate in this race towards absolute mediocrity.

Exactly. The post was about more than the book or the individual.

Our world is in deep trouble, our society and humanity itself and so few seem to care. The decline is rapid.

He could not agree more. What amazes me is the speed of this fall, and about the awareness of what is happening, since 2020 nothing amazes me anymore. Humanity has decided not to think, a few out of greed and the rest, I suppose, out of convenience.

Yeah, it's accelerated so quickly, it's like we got to a point, maybe the late 80's, and it's just multiplied exponentially from there.

It is possible that in the late 80's is when the acceleration of this decline began. From Spain, it is difficult to put a date, since the 80's and I would say the early 90's, after 40 years of dictatorship, still gave the impression that everything was going well, or that many things were working. At the end of the 90's my opinion is that it was already clear that society was getting worse.

Well, I think I'll be posting frequently over there, since I'm a fan of photos that almost never turn out well....
However, in all of them there is an effort to do my best.
Which won't be so shitty.
Cheers, @galenkp
