Here and there: Fifteen - Wells, Somerset, UK

wLLspYY55410 (4).jpg

Sometimes it's cool to throw plans out the window and just let things be as they'll be and doing exactly that was what brought me to the lovely little city called Wells in Somerset. We'd been staying in Bath about 35 kilometres away for five days (and loved it) and had heard about a couple things in the Wells area we thought we'd like to see so decided to change plans slightly and head over there.

We weren't there but for three days however spent an awesome time there, a rather quaint place with lovely architecture, soaking up the history of the once-Roman settlement and the stunning architecture found there as we wandered around; we also took a few side trips out from Wells including towards the town of Minehead and Dunster Castle (a short 72 kilometres away) that sits majestically atop a hill not too far away from the town - that's for another post though.

We stayed in an excellent Bed and Breakfast nestled within a lovely little forested area amongst fields of green, just on the outskirts of town which was one of the best we experienced in the UK although, to be fair, they were all excellent and exceeded our expectations.

The collage, a few images down, shows a few of the rooms and the front of the B&B; we couldn't resist some meanderings around the woods and little pathways snaking around the fields and we spent some time in the mornings and evenings in the lovely spaces within the building which felt very welcoming, cultured and inviting...the hospitality of the hosts was second-to-none.

We spent time investigating Wells Cathedral, the earliest reference to which dates back to the year 799, a long time ago, and the Bishop's Castle, images of (parts of) both can be seen in this post but the best ones I have include images of a person I'll not show on the webernets so you'll have to make do. The castle has been home to the Bishops for 800 years and the grounds contain very lovely gardens which are framed by the stone walls and ramparts of the castle and all is surrounded by the moat. It's very cool.

Below is the gatehouse to the castle and the moat of course, the next shows one of the towers which intersperse the ramparted walls all the way around, and notice the arrow-slit windows? They took home-defense seriously, and they needed to.

We're really glad to have added Wells as a destination and with a little extra driving time we actually didn't miss anything else we'd planned; it was a nice base of operations and we have fond memories of it, the friendly people and some really enjoyable meals...there was one night we went for fish and chips and fuck was it good!

Well I suppose you can't go to Blighty without having fish and chips. No mushy peas?

The site is so peaceful and calm, I only watch this on movies. Seeing them real should be a goal.

I actually have a silly question.....do you just pack your bags books the next flight and move to the next city just for sight seeing?
Because I notice you travel a lot.

Yeah, I travel a lot but it's all generally planned because Australia is a long way from most places in the world. Once there, the UK for instance, I have a general plan and make sure it's flexible enough to add in side trips and other changes.

I hope you manage to travel around sometime.

Waooo that's luxury(travelling) because it involves a lot of finances.
I am still hoping and planning I travel some day. Although traveling from my country to another is quite expensive and it takes a lot of time and effort. I guess it's not same with you over then.
Enjoying your trip.

Travelling abroad is always costly no matter from where one comes from.

Such beauty! It's a place worth visiting. I especially like the photo of the moat; defence was paramount. The history is so interesting, with bishops living there for so many years, and the age of the place is surprising. They've preserved it perfectly. I'd love to stroll through those gardens. Thank you for showing us such a beautiful place.

The gardens were really good, well worth a few hours of walking around but the interior spaces were also impressive. A place well worth visiting.

This reminds me of a castle I visited in Ireland a few years back. I am always fascinated by how many unique designs you'll see, and how well they fit in their local surroundings. The moat is a great touch. I'd imagine having a moat was quite the flex back in medieval times. I wonder if they kept fish in there, and if the defenders could catch fish from the walls. I'd imagine that would be quite handy during a drawn out siege.

The most was a required defensive barrier and I'd imagine if a seige took place fishing might be difficult for people with arrows being shot at them. Maybe someone tried it though, I'm not sure.

Wow that doesn't look like a bad and breakfast! I mean it's more an historic villa, outside and inside, you got great taste on picking it... I would be afraid to move inside and ruin the forniture or something 😅

That cathedral is beautiful, reminds a sort of Notre Dame and it's so big, I wonder why it's not much famous around...

It's reasonably well known although there's more well known ones such as Westminster and Salisbury cathedrals. They all have their unique attractions though.

The bed and breakfast was quite nice indeed and amazingly furnished and presented.

Overall, the trip to Wells was awesome.

I am very surprised by how impressive this place is. From the outside, it is almost impossible to stop admiring and photographing the details. I love the architecture of large buildings, whether old or modern... Then I saw the photos of the interior and I can see that that is where the magic begins hahaha, wow, I am so glad you enjoyed this experience, truly an unforgettable trip. Thank you for sharing it with us ✌️

Looks like y'all made a good decision when you decided to venture over to Wells. The grounds, architecture, B & B..all super charming. I could live pretty good in that gatehouse lol. Oh, and I really do need more arrow slits in my current home.

It was all rather nice, but to be fair, everywhere we went (and stayed) was really great, no complaints. As for arrow slits...very handy for hole defence, I recommend them.

Always, I knew you would, it's a natural and legitimate thing to want. Quite fashionable in certain circles.

If I were in Australia, I would want crocodiles, of course. Great way to dispense with your enemies. As it is now, I have to compost them, a totally messy affair.

Yes, crocs do the job, but compost is good for the garden so a good option indeed.

Wow, that looks like a really impressive bed and breakfast. I have never stayed at one of those. I think mainly because of the social aspect. I'm not too keen on sharing meals with strangers. I'm just antisocial like that! The photos are amazing and I can see how wonderful of a trip this must have been!

But you go out to pubs and restaurants with others in the same dining room don't you? It's exactly the same at a bed and breakfast.

Yes, we occasionally do that. I thought everyone sat at the same table at a bed and breakfast.

There's always a perfect place we can find if we will explore into it right? Looking so good how you venture that place, and I hope the long drive you take was worth it also staying there.

What surreal photos my friend, congratulations. Inside I was imagining archaic furniture, but it is quite modern. Visiting this place must be a dream, I can already imagine medieval situations.

The castles are amazing!

Castles are indeed interesting places and there's some amazing examples in England and Europe. I always find them fascinating.

So far I've only been able to visit 2 castles: 1 in Brazil that I was a little disappointed with and another in Europe that I was fascinated by. For those who enjoyed a childhood immersed in medieval RPGs, visiting them is a dream. I hope to be able to visit Europe and visit a few more castles in the future.

I'm sure you'll make it to see some castles over time, I hope it's soon.

Oh wow, you've been to Wells! My hub's new stepdad lives there. It was our local market town when we lived in Somerset and as Jamie's mum lives not too far from there (fifteen minutes) we often go to Wells market on a Saturday (great little market - french cheeses, olives, etc) or to the supermarket or out for dinner or charity shopping. We have spent a LOT of time in Wells! Last time, however, was the first time I'd been in the cathedral, which has an aboslutely fascinating history and is an incredible place. Funnily enough, I just mentioned the swans in the Bishop's Palace in my last post. The gardens are lovely. It's very much 'home' for us when we're in the UK. There's some great walks in the area too. Glastonbury, Wells, Bath - that's all 'our' part of England.
