Good Times and Bad Times Friends

avatar

If you look up the types of friendships there are, you might be surprised to see how many are clearly identified and categorized. Both the good kind and the bad ones. I was. Surprised, I mean.

I understood a long time ago there are two kinds of friends that probably transcend the classical categories you'll find at a quick search.

The good times friends are the ones that are great to have around in casual meetings, vacations, parties, they may seem supportive in your personal goals, but when things become challenging and you really need their help, count them out.

As long as you understand the limits of their "light" friendship, you will probably be ok.

The problem is these limits are rarely known until they are tested. And that means you are going through a very tough time and they don't come through for you. Which, depending on the level of expectation you had from them, can really hurt you, to the point you might not get over it, and would break the friendship, as "light" as it was.

The curious part is that to them it will look like you are blowing things out of proportions because they never offered you a bad times friendship.

Conversely, a bad times friend will be there for you through the hardest times. You may be surprised at first to see who is truly a bad times friend and who isn't. Sometimes a bad times friend is not necessarily the funniest to be around or someone you'd prefer to go on vacation with, but they come through when you need them the most.

If you are lucky to have one or more friends that are both for good and bad times, that's fantastic! Otherwise you might need to see who is who and depend on each of them for the appropriate situation.

I couldn't agree more dear friend. Friends truly are the anchors in life's stormy seas. Cherishing those good times together makes navigating the tough times a bit easier. Thanks for sharing such a relatable perspective buddy

Friends truly are the anchors in life's stormy seas.

They are... if they go with you through bad times.

Absolutely, the bad times is where true friends stay

But sometimes light or shallow friendships are ok too, as long as you are aware they are not and will never be deep.

You're right on that one too big brother... I think it's less painful when we already know the depth of each friend we have....

I’ve got different friends for different reasons in life. There are some for parties, work or what they know how to give advice best in

The bad time friends are the best and only true friends.

I agree. The other ones I wouldn't even call friends, in most circumstances. More like acquaintances or at most casual friends.

Yes, true @gadrian and I think it's only a form of being used unfortunately. !BBH !CTP #ctp

Sometimes. But sometimes they are sincere, but don't want a deeper friendship. Either they are incapable of getting close to someone and be there for them in hard times too, or they try to shield themselves from the suffering of others. For a regular person it can be hard to understand, but I've seen and heard about this happening in multiple situations.

I feel like I'm a boring person, so I never really looked for good times friends. I don't have a clear distinction between the two as well. I can think of a few friends that I can turn to in bad times, but I will still always invite them to the good times, since I consider them my close friends. I think those that you can rely on during bad times, are the better friends to have.

Absolutely! Bad times friends offer deep friendships that are tested in hardship. Good time friendships are rather shallow, but they can be fun to be around sometimes. That doesn't mean they are the best friends to have close to you, more like casual friends, or even mere acquaintances, because they can have a bad influence sometimes.

It's definitely something you don't know until it's tested. You never really know but it's those experiences that lets you know who you can really trust.

I agree. It's not like you can ask your friends: "Hey, I know we're having fun when we're having a drink together. But will you be there for me when things get tough?" I mean, you can ask, but the likelihood of receiving an automated "Sure, man!", true or not, are pretty high.

So true!! Unless both are tested, it's hard to determine who is who. I often have a hard time discerning between the two and I think in certain people, they can be both good times and bad times friends, which can be quite interesting.

That's the best kind of friends. Reliable during hard times and also ones you can have fun with.
