Some Things Are Not Easily Forgotten

As students, don't we all have some embarrassing moments that are hard to forget. One of mine that comes to mind happened many years ago while I was in secondary school but still very fresh in my memory.

During my time I was the head prefect girl which means I was in charge of the activities of all other students including making sure my fellow prefects discharged their duty to the best of their abilities and making sure the school grounds are all well swept and tidy.

My challenge back then was that we had very few prefects. Just me, as the head girl, labour prefect girl, social prefect girl. All in all we were just eight in numbers as prefects due to the bad reputation of some boys in my class. When they were supposed to be chosen as prefect they were ignored in order to punish them by our teachers.

This made my responsibility as a head girl very much and sometimes I struggle to deliver.

The embarrassing moment

On that particular day, I was busy supervising students, trying to get them to do their various morning duties, such as cutting the grass, sweeping the classrooms and staffroom. The whole work was very overwhelming for me as most of my fellow prefects were lagging behind in discharging their responsibilities.

While I was running around to make sure the whole school was well tidy up before the assembly time, somehow I forgot to make sure the assembly ground itself was swept, in fact I directed a student to do the job but she never did it and I was so occupied to check back to be sure she did until the assembly bell was rang.

One thing I don't like is being scolded. I always do what I was supposed to do at any given time to avoid having issues with my teachers. But that day I failed to deliver on my responsibility and I was so embarrassed when one of my teachers, whom I was his favorite, called me out in front of the whole school, asked why the assembly verander was not well swept? Before I could explain myself, he ordered me to go get a broom and start sweeping.

I was so ashamed and embarrassed, as if the ground should just open and swallowed me. Me sweeping in front of everyone like that. But I had no choice but to do as he says. And the annoying part, I always did my best as a prefect, came to school on time, supervised the students while my other prefects came to school at any time they liked. But after that day I had to report them to our labor teacher, so that he could make them do the job they signed up for. Even though they still lagged behind, sometimes there was a bit of improvement on their part for the remaining time we had as prefects.

That experience taught me the importance of working together as a team. When a task is given, getting all the team involved to do their part of the job is very important for a better job than a single person carrying the whole job on his or her shoulder. As this could affect the job badly if not timely addressed.
