A short ride through the flowerless flower fields πŸ˜ƒ

avatar

Today was quite a nice day, so I decided to make a short bike ride after dinner.
I live in the neighborhood of the famous flower fields which are a touristic attraction.
The flower season is from March until the start of May. Since it was already the 13th of May I hoped there were still some flowers left.

The first field I passed was almost completely empty. Except from the two hares that were jumping around (can you spot them in the picture?) there were almost no tulips.

A bit further on there was a bit more colour, but most of the tulips were already decapitated.
You might wonder why the head of the beautiful flowers are chopped off while they could also sell them.
This is because they sell the tulip bulbs.
When the tulip is topped, it no longer wastes energy on the flower which will cause the bulb to grow. The bulbs will stay in the ground for another three months before they are digged out.

You can replant the bulbs next year and when they grow big enough they will multiply themselves by growing small bulbs alongside them.
When you peel off the small bulbs you can plant them again to restart the process.

If you want to see the flower fields in bloom you could check out the blog I made about them last year.

They do cut off some of the tulips. Alongside the roads you see a lot of tulip stands like the one in the photo where you an buy some tulips fresh from the field.

There was one field that was still fully in bloom. As you can see there are some tourists in the field. Despite of the instructions not to walk into the fields a lot of tourists still enter then.

Despite the fact that there almost weren't any flower fields I'm bloom anymore it was a nice ride.
It was sunny and the roads in between the fields are good and there aren't many cars.
Two weeks two these roads would have been full of tourists from all different countries of the world, but mostly from Asia.
But now most of the roads were completely empty which is very nice for cyclists!
