Hello Hiveans, welcome to my blog, trust your day went well. It's another week, and #Hiveghana has some very interesting topics up for grabs 😊 So one of the topics for this week is:

Which educational setting offers the most advantages for students like yourself. Consider factors like academic achievement, social development, and personal growth. From your experience, would you allow your kids attend a single sex school or a mixed sex school?

Talking about my preference on educational settings, that is either the single sex school or the mixed sex school, I think they both have their advantages, things that make them stand out from the other, and also some corresponding disadvantages, as there will always be a disadvantage to anything that has an advantage.

I would like to give my opinion about both school situations and then speak on my preference. Growing up I didn't really have the option of going to a single sex school, all of my options were narrowed down to mixed sex schools, I'll try as much as possible not to be bias in my judgement hehe, I won't let my going to a mixed sex school inform my judgement, but rather make my choice from an informed decision.

So for single sex schools, it's usually either just an all girls school or an all boys school, it's the mixed sex schools that has a combination of both the boys and the girls.

Single sex Schools

Advantages

Lesser Distractions
As we all know, during the adolescent years students tend to want to get involved with persons of the opposite sex, which might lead to some form of distraction from their studies which should be their main focus. But in single sex schools, this distraction is brought to almost the nearest minimum as it's either just the girls or just the boys, so this is actually an advantage to students of the single sex school.

Increased or Boosted Self Confidence
The learning environment here has just a single sex, so these individuals might feel more comfortable expressing themselves amongst peers of their sex, rather than the pressure that often times comes with wanting to impress or out shine the opposite sex, so in a way it boosts their confidence. Common, we all know, or most of us know how sometimes you might become unnecessarily shy when you have to do some things in the presence of someone you have a crush on, but here that pressure isn't available.

Disadvantages

Lack of Socialization
Believe it or not the absence of the other sex within the school limits the opportunity for students of single sex school to socialize which is one very vital developmental skills needed for young adults to be able navigate the world when the time comes.

Reinforced Gender Stereotypes
This could be an advantage, but also a disadvantage to single sex schools, these schools might reinforce gender stereotypic roles through some of the behaviour and roles expectations they set for the students. For instance an all girls school might encourage then students to go for more nurturing roles while the guys are lured towards the more competitive roles.

Mixed Sex Schools

Advantages

Social Development
In mixed schools, students are afforded the opportunity to socialize with their peers both of the opposite sex, which is a very essential developmental skill to enable them navigate the adult world.

Different Perspectives
Mixed sex schools affords the students the opportunity to be able get different views on different aspects of life especially from the perspective of the opposite sex, thus enhancing their thinking capacity.

Disadvantages

Gender Biase
The students and even the teachers might become biased in the assigning of responsibilities to the students which might get to have an impact on the students

Potential for Distraction
The fact that the both sex are in the same environment, their attention might be distracted and they begin to loose focus and engage in other things and derailing from their primary focus which is supposed to be their studies. This could be a disadvantage for mixed sex schools.

Having gone through the merits and demerits of single sex schools and that of mixed sex schools, I would say that personally I would choose the mixed sex school as it afford the students the opportunity to associate and socialize with the opposite sex, which is the practice in the real world.

In the real world, no one has the ability to segregate a certain gender and remove the other, we all have to coexist, so giving students the opportunity of learning this very essential life skill at that age is an investment I'm willing to make. Although there are some disadvantages, it's left for me as a parent to guide my children and help them navigate their way even in the midst of challenges.

This is my entry for the #Hiveghana weekly engagement.

Mixed schools has a lot of advantages to me because at some point children will still get to meet with the opposite gender.

Exactly they will still get to meet them sooner or later, so why not introduce them earlier and guide them rather than shield them and then send them off later with no form of preparation.

Maybe because I passed the mixed sex school that's why I don't fancy the single sex school.
I don't know how people cope with seeing just one gender in all the schooling years.

I attended a girls-only school in my own days but I think a mixed-gender school is very good. In fact, all my four kids passed through mixed-sex schools. The boys and the girls have equal conditions and opportunities to learn and compete for prizes.

Exactly, this an advantage that the mixed sex schools offer. Thanks for stopping by.

I think that it depends on the school and teachers and you the student yourself . You could attend a single sex school and be wayward or a mixed school and be wayward too . It’s all up to you.

Well, nobody truly goes into the world to face only one gender. We face both after school, so you have a point for choosing mixed school.
